UPDATE: Our upcoming Naturalist-led hike of the 19th hole at Mad River Glen is full! If you're registered and cannot attend or if you'd like to be added to a waitlist, please email [email protected].

We're looking forward to exploring Stark Mountain and the 19th Hole in our upcoming hike on Saturday, August 15th at 2pm! We will begin taking the snowshoe trail up the hill, passing familiar ski trails, sugar maples and mature yellow birches. Keep an eye out for large eastern hemlock and even bear claw marks on American beech trees!

We'll continue through the hardwood forest of the 19th Hole, passing under a large bedrock exposure exploring newly cleared ski trails until we link up with old logging roads that go past boulders taken over by young trees bending across the trail as a shaded archway.

Trail Blaze the 19th Hole!

Mark your calendars for August 15th at 2pm, as we explore the newly acquired 19th Hole property at Mad River Glen via the Snowshoe Trail. The 2.25-mile loop is an off-the-beaten-path adventure featuring varied tree species, unique forest composition, and some of the steepest, most thrilling terrain in our hike lineup! Bring your adventurous spirit, reliable footwear, and trekking poles—you’re going to need them as we explore!

July is the perfect month to explore Stark Mountain! 🏔️

Join us on Saturday, July 18th at 2:00 PM for a Naturalist-led hike up to the waterfall. We’ll be exploring local forestry and using the waterfall's unique features to uncover the geological history of Vermont.

Bonus: This is our shortest, most accessible hike of the season—perfect for kids and families!

From spring blooms to summer solstice! ☀️

Last month, Naturalist Gene O. kicked off our hike series with an amazing group on the Snowshoe trail, diving deep into tree ID and spring wildflowers.

Next up: We’re stepping into summer on Saturday, June 20th at 5pm! Join us for a guided solstice hike led by Kevin Tolan up to the Kent Thomas Nature Center to see how the mountain has transformed for the season.

From the busy pollinators buzzing along sunny ski trails to the delicate, fleeting plants hiding in the shaded forest, you’ll see the mountain in a whole new light. Discover how your own backyard observations can contribute to local conservation efforts—and when we're done, be sure to head over to Stark's Pub to relax and refuel!

Last night SMF hosted an Owls of Vermont program. Led by Anna from the Vermont Museum of Natural History, we learned much about Barred Owls and the Eastern Screech Owls. She brought live owls, photos of other types of owls, and touchable artifacts. It was a great presentation and extremely well attended. Nice to see such curiosity about owls and our environment!

Yesterday was our 8th Annual SMF StorySki - it was a great day! So fun seeing the kids (and adults) skiing and reading, “I Wish It Would Snow” by Sarah Dillard. After, there was hot chocolate and stuffed bunnies! One family told us it’s their favorite ski day of the year. Another said they’ve waited all year for this. Making memories!
