Did you know the INDY Foundation awards a scholarship each year to a graduating Foley High School senior in honor of where both Kayla and the late Kyle Strand graduated? 💙

In this episode, Kayla reflects on the inspiration behind the scholarship and shares the impact of reading this year’s recipient essay centered on resilience and overcoming hardship.

It’s a meaningful conversation about how difficult seasons can shape us and remind us to appreciate the moments that matter most.

Meet Little INDY Warrior Guy Yang

Guy Yang is a happy, strong-willed 4-year-old little boy who was completely healthy until February of 2026, when everything changed abruptly.

Guy, the youngest of five, was admitted to Children’s Minnesota in Minneapolis after his family noticed a swollen face and spidery veins on his upper chest. On February 24th, they received the heartbreaking news that there was a large mass in his chest cavity that was 2x the size of his sweet little heart. After spending 3 weeks in the PICU, Guy was finally able to safely receive a biopsy and was diagnosed with stage 3 Burkitt lymphoma.

Since beginning chemotherapy, Guy has been adjusting to a new normal of hospital stays and clinic visits. Throughout his fight against cancer, hospital staff have described him as “feisty” because of the incredible resilience and strength he continues to show through treatments and medications.

Guy’s bravery has inspired everyone around him, from his siblings and their schools to extended family members and neighbors, to just do more and be more because we are not guaranteed tomorrow.

His favorite things are playing with his siblings, swimming, and playing on his iPad. Above all else, Guy simply wishes for “the cancer to go away” so he can “be 6490 years old with his bro Mason.” 🥹

Please join us in surrounding Guy and his family with prayer, love, and support as he continues this fight. We are believing for strength on the hard days, healing in the days ahead, and brighter moments for this sweet little boy and everyone walking beside him. We are cheering for you every step of the way, Guy. ❤️

Meet Little INDY Warrior Ivy 💛

This Spring, Ivy’s world changed overnight. After being picked up from daycare not acting like herself and complaining of pain, her family brought her to the ER where scans revealed a mass on her liver. Ivy was transferred to Children’s Hospital and within days began chemotherapy for a rare cancer diagnosis: Hepatoblastoma, a disease that affects only about 2 in a million children.

What they thought might be a short hospital stay quickly became a much longer journey filled with complications, time in the PICU, unanswered questions, and the emotional challenge of balancing life between the hospital and home with their other child. Through it all, Ivy’s family continues to lean on the incredible team at Children’s and the moments they can still spend together as a family.

Please keep Little INDY Warrior Ivy and her family in your prayers as they continue this fight. 💛

Joy looks different for everyone, but too often we move through life without stopping to ask what truly fills us up.

In the next episode of the Joy First mini-series, Kayla shares how creating a simple “joy inventory” can help uncover the activities, relationships, and moments that genuinely bring happiness and purpose into your life. From revisiting childhood passions to intentionally making space for joyful moments, this episode is a reminder that protecting your joy matters; especially in life’s hardest seasons. 🤍

Meet Kristina!

In 2024, Kristina was a 38 year old, healthy, active mother and wife to two amazing (boy/girl) 2 year old twins. By mid 2024, she noticed a small lump and some breast pain that she originally didn't think much of, but set up an appt with her OBGYN to get it checked out. The Dr. originally thought it was fibrotic tissue given her age, but made the referral regardless to give Kristina peace of mind. Those next imaging and biopsy appts confirmed that Kristina had what they thought at the time was Stage 1 invasive ductal carcinoma and invasive lobular carcinoma.

This diagnosis came while Cory and Kristina were in the middle of a massive home remodel, the twins start to preschool for the first time right round the corner and Kristina trying her best to get things in order as much as she could before her September masectomy surgery. A week before surgery she had a lump pop up below her armpit that another imaging confirmed it had likely spread to 1 lymph node, but all else looked good. During the surgery additional lymph nodes tested positive and the final results from the surgery had shown that it was more extensive then originally thought. This then led doctors to order a PET scan, which showed what they had originally thought was Stage 1 was in fact Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer which had spread to her spine, neck, skull and superclavicular lymph nodes. All of this had been hiding on previous imaging. Kristina's treatment plan changed very last minute from chemo and radiation to a maintenance plan that she will now be on for life/until it stops working.

She has always been a believer that God has a plan for all of us and everything in life happens for a reason even if we can't see it in that exact moment. She saw how God worked during Cory and her infertility struggles and then blessed them with their twins and she knows this too will have its purpose. ❤️

Meet Sandy!

I had a wonderful childhood, growing up in Duluth, then moving to Rochester - always in Minnesota. I got my AAS degree in Animal Health from University of Minnesota, Waseca and met my husband, Bill, there.

In 1979, we were married and moved to St. Cloud so he could complete his education. We liked the area, so finally settled in Foley where we raised our 2 children. I worked at Dayton's/Marshall Field's/Macy's for 25 years in various capacities then left to work in the Activities Department at Foley High School for another 13 years while also coaching 9th grade volleyball.

My children have grown and are happy and healthy, I have 2 wonderful grandsons and my husband and I celebrated 46 years together this year.

My cancer journey started in 2021 when I had a mole on my back removed that tested positive for cancer. After a wide excision removal, I was denied any immunotherapy treatment because of the score given to the spot.

After 1 year and a few CT scans, a PET scan showed spots in several locations. I also had a small lump on my neck. I was told I had Stage 4 Melanoma. Radiation was done on my neck and back and I started on immunotherapy (Opdualag).

I am now into my treatments for 3 years and my last PET scan showed no spots! Thank God!
