Quiet Skies Coalition, Ltd.

Quiet Skies Coalition, Ltd. Volunteer based organization. QSC is funded entirely by donations from supporters.

Our hope is that other local groups fighting the scourge of noise pollution--across the nation--will join with us in this coalition. It is our belief that joining together to focus efforts will help us in the battle to return to quiet skies over our homes on the East End of Long Island, NY.

Sorry to those reaching out for confirmation of QSC’s 2016 endorsements for Town Board referred to in the recent East Hampton Star editorial. QSC has not endorsed candidates in the last election cycle, or the Democratic primary conducted yesterday. It’s worth noting, however, that in 2017, QSC endorsed not only Coucilwoman Kathee Burke-Gonzalez and now-Coucilman, Jeff Bragmen, but also Peter Van Scoyoc for Town Supervisor. The Star‘s editorial omitted QSC’s endorsement of Peter Van Scoyoc for unknown reasons.

Apologies to the aircraft noise affected, but the QSC website has been corrupted and had to be removed from QSC's FaceBook page. Not sure how that happened, but the web has strange ways. QSC will try to repair this, but not sure what can be done. In other news, the Town of East Hampton has produced some preliminary studies regarding the future of the airport available at the Town's website. https://ehamptonny.gov/DocumentCenter/Index/86. The website is not easily managed. To find the reports, one must open the 2021 file.

The Document Center is for storage of documents of many different file types. Documents stored in the Document Center can be separated by folders and subfolders.

So, this has obviously been the worst summer on record for aircraft noise impacts. Reporting noise complaints remains an important tool for the noise affected, as exhausting and infuriating as that experience is. Write to the Town Board. Write a letter to the Editor of the East Hampton Star, the paper of record. Attend a Town Board meeting and recount your personal experience for the Board members. Explain what your summer was like. Hearing from individuals is much more effective than anything else you can do.

Keep up the great work, folks! Record your aircraft noise complaints at: https://airnoisereport.com, (ANR), the simplest, most convenient way to log a complaint. ONE CAVEAT: if your aircraft does not appear on the screen it could be one of these three issues: #1 - the aircraft is flying below 200 ft, and therefore undetectable by tracking devices; #2 - jets over 12,500 lbs do not appear on ANR, an omission that is being remedied; or #3 - the aircraft you are experiencing either does not have a transponder, equipment installed on the aircraft that allows it to be electronically tracked, or that transponder has been turned off by the pilot. If you do not find the disturbing aircraft on the screen, please call the Town's hotline: 1-800-376-4817 or log onto the Town's PlaneNoise website to register your complaint. Let's make sure everyone knows how terrible the noise has been this weekend! We must keep fighting for home rule!!

Another troubling issue that was raised at yesterday's meeting by one audience member was that of the leaded gas used in many prop planes. Alternatives are available but the FAA has given general aviation a free hand, despite a lawsuit filed by EarthJustice in 2012.
For those interested in the leaded fuel issue, and we know many pilots are -- take a look at this from a Flying Magazine article:

With proven products on the market, why make it so difficult?

Helicopter pilots track record vis a vis compliance with voluntary noise abatement measures---abysmal. No surprise to most of us, we've been watching them for years. But now there is data from three sources to back up residents' complaints. It was an informative meeting today so be sure to read the power point presentation which can be viewed as of Friday on the town website -- http://www.town.east-hampton.ny.us/

Southold Town has formed a resident group to combat helicopter noise over their town.
The message to aviation noisemakers from East Enders is clear..residents of towns and villages on both forks are united in our battle to return peace and quiet to the skies above our homes. Commuter air traffic benefits only a few while many suffer. Enough.

The new Southold Town helicopter noise group will work with similar citizens' advisory groups on the South Fork to tackle the helicopter noise issue.

Given experiences recounted to us with malfunctioning equipment at the airport and the noise complaint line, we believe that numbers--certainly of complaints--are under reported.
Here's how 27East reported the news on the airport today:
http://www.27east.com/news/article.cfm/General-Interest-EH/79412/New-Data-On-Airport-Traffic-Shows-Increases-Through-August

Capped by a busier-than-usual August, overall traffic at East Hampton Airport so far this year is 22 percent higher than it was last year—but the cause of most noise complaints, helicopter takeoffs and landings, are up by a much greater margin.Through the end of August, there were 6,574 helicopters…

The five towns of the East End come together on many issues that impact our communities but one of, if not THE Biggest Issue this summer has been noise and pollution from East Hampton Airport operations--but where is Riverhead Town supervisor on this issue? Nowhere to be seen and mute on the issue.
