Kumano I Ke Ala (KIKA) is a non-profit organization located in Kaua’i in the ‘ili of Kakalae, ahupua’a of Makaweli in the moku of Kona. Makaweli valley is located on the west side of the island and was once home to a thriving agricultural community where lo’i kalo (wetland taro patches) flourished. Over time, mahi ‘ai kalo (taro farming) has diminished and today the need for food security for our

community and throughout the state is imminent. Aloha ‘Āina translates to ‘love for the land” as it is the source and provider for everything that defines Native Hawaiians. Aloha ‘Āina is the core value of Kumano I Ke Ala that provided the foundation for its creation and expected growth in the areas of (1) Restoration and food production, (2) Education and Mentorship, and (3) Strengthening Community. KIKA has made cultural education a priority in its programming and community engagement. Our educational programming teaches indigenous values and practices and is designed to invoke critical thinking, creative solutions and self determination through hands-on learning.

“ʻApu” — to hold.
“Wai” — water.

Did you know, this variety of kalo is named for its cup-like appearance and ability to hold/collect wai which was reserved only for aliʻi?
