SPREAD YOUR WINGS!

We hope this inspires you to spread your wings and try something new this week. Maybe some citizen science?

There are a lot of caterpillars 🐛 and monarchs on the crown flower plants in our yard right now and we caught this one just leaving it’s chrysalis. It never gets old and is always AMAZING to watch them emerge and take shape.

Can you find all of the caterpillars, chrysalis and butterflies in the picture of our crown flower plant? Did we miss any? 👀🔎

If there is a crown flower plant near you, check it out and see if you see any caterpillars, chrysalis or butterflies. Maybe you already rear butterflies and want to give this a try.

If you would like to try the citizen science project, let us know. We have kits with the instructions and supplies you need to participate. Contact us via email, [email protected] if you would like to give it a try. You can also find a link in our bio to the project.

There are many more citizen science projects you can try too. A great resource is where you can search for a citizen science project that interests you!

Let us know if you find one you enjoy, we are always looking for new things to try!

Have a great week!

GIRL SCOUTS STEM FEST 2023!

Mahalo to for inviting us to the 2023 Girl Scouts STEM Fest last Friday!
We had so much fun sharing the BREATH OF FRESH AIR Activity with the AMAZING Kauai Girl Scouts.

The scouts did a great job pipetting, and doing an experiment demonstrating how carbon dioxide can be adsorbed by the mineral zeolite to recycle air, just like the process that filters air on the .space.station. How cool is that!

We hope that everyone had as much fun as we did and let us know if you checked out any of the links that we provided you about , , .space.station , and more diy activities from our friends . We have added links in our bio too.

We have more new activities from the NISE Network Voyage Through the Solar System Series if you would like to share them at your school or community group, just let us know.

Have a great week & enjoy breathing easy here on Earth!

KIUC YOUTH TOUR!

Following a three-year break due to the COVID-19 pandemic, selected four juniors to participate in 2023 Youth Tour: Joveline Alvarez of Waimea High, Leilani Kass of Hawaiʻi Technology Academy, Sarah Morioka of Kapaʻa High and Bailey Ponce of Island School.

Through the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association’s Youth Tour program, students from across the United States travel with their co-ops to meet in Washington, D.C., to learn about history, government and how electric cooperatives work. KIUC partners with Kansas Electric Cooperatives, and we travel together to form the Kansas-Hawaiʻi delegation.

CONGRATULATIONS! To all of these outstanding students who participated this year and especially, Joveline Alvarez who is also a KCSC Intern. We are so proud of Joveline and her many accomplishments.

Make sure to read more about it in your fall KIUC Currents Magazine, https://kiuc.coop/currents.

We are also proud of and grateful for all that does for our community in addition to powering our island, mostly with renewable energy EVERYDAY! 🔌🔋♻️💦☀️

Have a great weekend!

ANOTHER KIND OF RESCUE!

Our friends rescued this 'Ua'u chick! After one of its parents died, this little 'ua'u chick faced certain death by starvation. To give it the best possible chances of survival, they flew it out of the mountains and handed it over to the expert care of our friends at . Hopefully the chick can now be nursed back to health.

BE ALERT WHEN DRIVING!

Sorry for these graphic pictures, but these Newell’s Shearwaters were both found in the road in Port Allen on Monday morning. They were most likely hit by cars after they fell to the ground in the road.

We appreciate that it is dark and the birds are hard to see, but we just want to encourage everyone to be alert and take special care when driving at night and in the early morning when birds could be in the road, disoriented and unable to move out of the way.

Seabird fallout season continues until December 15th and we can all make a difference by being alert and aware that seabirds could be in unexpected areas on the ground and unable to protect themselves or get out of harms way.

You can learn more by visiting the and websites. We also have links to more seabird information in our bio.

Thanks for being alert and on the lookout this seabird fledgling season.

IMPORTANT REMINDER!

Here is a great reminder from our friends . If you find a downed seabird, bring it to the nearest aid station or, for emergencies, call 808-635-5117.

Our friends are out there everyday checking the aid stations, picking up birds, rehabilitating them if needed and releasing them out to sea.

There is a bi community out there working hard to help these amazing endangered seabirds and you can be a part of it too.

There are more links to seabird information on the KCSC linktree in our bio.

Have a great day and be on the lookout for fallen seabirds until December 15th.

SEABIRD SEARCHING SUCCESS!!!

We are so happy to share that the seabird searchers from Kani Wildlife Control, KWC, have alreay rescued a record SIX Newell's Shearwaters from the Port Allen search area so far this season!

Unfortunately, there was one dead Newell's Shearwater that was also found in Port Allen last week, but if the searchers had not been doing there important work, some of the six birds that were rescued could have also been injured or worse. Instead, six Newell’s Shearwaters from Port Allen and one from Hokulei Shopping Center, where KWC also does seabird searching, have made it to our friends at who will release those rescued Newell's Shearwaters out to sea where they belong.

CONGRATULATIONS to all of the KWC Seabird Searchers! We are so thankful for your excellent work and committment to take care of our endangered seabirds.

We look forward to sharing about more rescues through the rest of the Seabird Fledgling Season that runs until December 15th.

We remind everyone to be on the lookout for downed seabirds every night.

KCSC HAS A NEW INDUSTRY PARTNERSHIP!

KCSC is happy to share that we have a new industry partnership with Kani Wildlife Control, LLC.

In this new partnership, Kani Wildlife Control, LLC https://www.kaniwildlifecontrol.com/ , is now managing the seabird searching activity in support of the Downed Seabird Searching and Monitoring Plan for The Kauaʻi Seabird Habitat Conservation Plan at the Alexander & Baldwin, Inc Port Allen Commercial Property.

Kani Wildlife Control, LCC, is a local family-owned business that also does seabird searching at other A&B properties on Kauaʻi and has over 35 years of experience with animal control work here.

The 2023 seabird searching team now has the advantage of being part of this professional organization that will provide a deeper and even more career connected experience, especially for the student participants.

KCSC will continue to build on our collaborations with seabird organizations and community on Kauaʻi by promoting awareness to seabird research, conservation, and opportunities for learning through our programing and organization. We will also continue to support recruitment for all types of careers and learning opportunities provided by these organizations, like searching during the seabird fledgling seasons.

Further through our partnership with Kani Wildlife Control, LLC we will share about their work and be a resource for them and their team. We are so proud of all of the seabird searchers in the program.

Stay tuned to learn about the GREAT work they have been doing and don't forget that we can all be on the lookout for downed seabirds during their fledgling season from now until December 15th on Kauaʻi.
