We’re back hosting the First Whale Sighting Contest! Predict the date and time you think the first humpback whale of the season will be spotted in Maui Nui, from any private or commercial vessel or from shore. The closest prediction wins whalewatch tickets for two with PacWhale Eco-Adventures.

The contest begins today, Oct. 5, 2026, at 10 a.m. HST and closes when the first whale is spotted. Predictions should be in HST. One prediction per person. Entrants must be at least 18 years old and live in the U.S. The first sighting must be confirmed by a news report, and the date and time of the sighting to determine the winner. The winner will be contacted only by email from a .org address. The excursion must be redeemed within one calendar year of acceptance. Airfare and lodging are not included. No purchase necessary. This contest is not sponsored, endorsed or administered by, or associated with Instagram or Facebook.

Keiki Whale Watch is coming soon!!! Our 2027 is a few months away… here is what you need to know!

💻 The 2027 Keiki Whale Watch schedule will be released on October 1st. Please check out pacificwhale.org/what-we-do/education to find more details!

✨ The program will be completely FREE for all selected school groups scheduled to participate. This season will be fully application based. These apps open Oct 1st.

🩵 We are so excited to share this program with Maui County students from 2-8th grade! Keiki Whale Watch includes a classroom program and a whale watch field trip. Our goal is serving 3,000 students this season!

Sofia is someone who lights up a room with her genuine personality and kind heart. Originally from Chile, her volunteer efforts brought her to Maui for a few weeks this past whale season, where she supported PWF’s 45th World Whale Day festivities. She spent days of her trip painting marine life for our parade float, including beautiful coral, turtle, octopus, shark, and dolphin. Her volunteer efforts at Stable Road Beach kept marine life safer and the beach cleaner. She also volunteered at Community Day at the temporary tattoos both, engaging each keiki who passed by.

Sofia’s commitment to ocean protection extends far beyond Maui. Back in Chile, she created a watercolor of a false killer whale mother and calf which captured something special. That artwork will soon be available in sticker form to help garner signatures for the false killer whale petition, turning her art into a creative tool for conservation.   

Sofia shows us that volunteer support takes many forms. Whether painting a float, removing marine debris from the beach, or creating artwork that advances our mission halfway around the world, it all flows from a deep care for our ocean and the creatures in it.

This time around, we’ll take you to the shoreline of Kapou (Lisianski Island), show you our team in action, and explain why this place is so important to protect. This livestream is tailored for students, so please share it with educators and students you think may be interested!

Today we remember August 8th, 2023 and the love, loss and resilience our Maui community has carried ever since. 

We remember the people, homes and way of life that were lost. We remember the hours, days and weeks that followed when we all came together and showed up for Maui as a community in action. People showed up for each other, gave what they had, and helped where they could for as long as they could.

Three years later, we are forever changed, but the community is strong. We are grateful to be a part of the community that continues to kōkua and for the people and organizations doing the work, day in and day out, to mālama Maui. 

One way to honor this 3rd anniversary is by giving back, just as we all did in the days following August 8th. Come put your hands in ‘āina this month and take a moment to reconnect and remember all that Maui provides for us.

We are so excited for Bri, our Conservation and Outreach Manager & Marine Debris Queen, to be joining PMDP on their upcoming mission. They will be traveling to Papahānaumokuākea for their large scale marine debris removal mission to help protect this culturally sacred and environmentally critical area of the Hawaiian Islands.

Bri exemplifies the value of mālama in her work as she leads with passion, commitment and intention. Her kuleana is to create spaces and opportunities for folks to care for this place and her commitment to her work inspires us all! We are so excited for her upcoming journey and wish her safe travels with lots of learning along the way!
