Chris Flateland brings the spirit of aloha to everything he does at Pacific Whale Foundation.

Whether he’s chaperoning keiki on whale watches, digging into restoration efforts across the island, supporting creative projects, sorting abandoned fishing debris, or hauling ghost nets out of the water with our Marine Debris Rapid Response Team, Chris shows up with his whole heart every single time.

That kind of dedication does not go unnoticed.
We are thrilled to share that Chris has been selected for an internship with our partners at the Division of Forestry and Wildlife, taking his passion for protecting the ʻāina and ocean to the next level.

Chris, mahalo nui loa. You are living proof of what’s possible when someone leads with heart. We cannot wait to see everything you accomplish, and we are grateful to keep working alongside you every Thursday during our Ridge to Reef Mālama Pono volunteer days with the Division of Forestry and Wildlife from 7:30 to 9:30 am.

Film has the power to heal, connect, and carry culture forward. The inaugural Wailuku Film Festival is doing exactly that, bringing together Hawaiian storytellers, Indigenous voices, artists, and filmmakers from across the Pacific and around the world for five days of cinema rooted in place and community.

This is the kind of movement Maui has been waiting for.

Pacific Whale Foundation is proud to stand behind it. Through our own World Whale Film Festival, we know firsthand what happens when a community gathers around the power of storytelling. We encourage everyone to get out there, support these filmmakers, and be part of something powerful!

🎬 Wailuku Film Festival | June 17 to 21
ʻĪao Theater and Maui Arts and Cultural Center

Help Pacific Whale Foundation by cleaning up our shores on one of the dirtiest beach days in the US!

Every Fourth of July, festive beachgoers leave behind a wave of litter, fireworks debris, plastic cups, and food waste that washes into the ocean and threatens the marine life that calls our coastlines home.

🌊 Today we celebrate World Ocean Day together, for a bluer, healthier future.

The ocean is not just a place. It is the heartbeat of our planet, home to humpback whales, spinner dolphins, coral reefs, and countless species that remind us what we are fighting for. At Pacific Whale Foundation, every research dive, every eco-adventure, every classroom program is a commitment to the sea that gives us life.
Together we can be the change!

Volunteers Needed for the inaugural ʻAha Niu: Maui Nui Coconut Celebration Festival on Sat., June 13 at Maui Nui Botanical Gardens. The festival is a celebration of this amazing tree of life and a call to action as Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle closes in on each of the Hawaiian Islands. Our partner has been supporting the effort for the last few months, propagating and caring for hundreds of coconut palms which will be given away at the event.

What a spectacular day supporting at their beach clean up! After a steep hike, we collectively cleaned up the rocky coastline at Makamakaʻole. Because the location is so remote the debris had to be helicoptered out 🚁

By working together, we create efficient systems, stronger partnerships, and greater impact to protect marine life.

Mahalo and all the fabulous volunteers!
