New Drop! 📊 Our Real Property Tax Revenue Estimator is now live at mauirptool.org.
CHEEHOO!
Property taxes may sound dry, but they matter to all of us. They make up roughly 40% of Maui County’s total revenue and help pay for roads, fire protection, water systems, and other services we rely on every day. They also affect housing costs, quality of life, and how the cost of running the County is shared among residents, businesses, and visitor accommodations.
Each year, the Mayor proposes property tax rates, and the County Council reviews, adjusts, and approves them as part of the annual budget process. That process is currently underway for the 2026-2027 Fiscal Year!
This new public tool we created makes it easier to see how the system works, and to take part in the process. It's being used by the Council, and it's available to the public too!
Using the tool, users can adjust property tax rates and value tiers across all twelve property classes and immediately see how those changes would affect County revenue. In other words, you can test real “what if” ideas with the real numbers, and then let policymakers know what you think.
Try this (or another scenario) and let us (or the County Council) know what you think: What if long-term rental rates were lowered to match owner-occupied rates, helping keep rents more stable for local families, while luxury visitor accommodations rates were slightly increased to help offset the difference?
Explore the tool, and bring specific ideas into the County budget conversation.
