The ʻOhana is proud to host a four part series of events with Bishop Museum celebrating Laʻa, Maʻa, Paʻa: 50 Years of Aloha ʻĀina. We will have one panel for each key word of our motto: Laʻa (09/24), Maʻa (10/22) and Paʻa (11/12), as well as a massive celebration of 50 years of aloha ʻāina on November 13th.

On Thursday September 24, we will kick off this series with the opening ceremony of a exhibit installation called “Kanaloa ka Laʻa o Kohemālamalama: Unconquerable is the Divinity of Kohemālamalama” followed by a riveting discussion of what it means to hoʻolaʻa (sanctify) our pilina to ʻāina and akua. The exhibit was curated by Pūlama Lima and members of the ʻOhana, and the panel will feature hoʻomana extraordinaries and living legends Huihui Kanahele-Mossman, Kalā Mossman, Luana Busby-Neff and Kaliko Baker. Join us for an evening of ceremony and manaful conversations on laʻa!

Aloha ʻĀina is the Hawaiian super power. We’ve known this for for a couple hundred years already. Kanaka Maoli have centered our positionality around aloha and ʻāina. Kahoʻolawe is no different. Since the late 70s until today, the Kahoʻolawe movement has been and will always be about aloha ʻāina. Aloha is so central to the movement that on August 22nd, 1992, Uncle Parley Kanakaʻole declared a kapu aloha prior to an ʻawa ceremony that shaped the future of Kahoʻolawe. Tap in to the Hawaiian super power, aloha ʻāina.
