Juneteenth, (June 19) also known as Juneteenth Independence Day or Freedom Day, is observed in 45 states. It commemorates the June 19, 1865, emancipation of enslaved African-Americans throughout the former Confederacy of the southern United States.

The Kingdom of Hawaii abolished slavery in 1852, 17 years earlier. Article 12 of The Hawaiian Kingdom’s 1852 Constitution, which went into effect June 14, 1852, stated: “Slavery shall, under no circumstances whatever, be tolerated in the Hawaiian Islands: whenever a slave shall enter Hawaiian territory he shall be free.”
