A History of Service

Five decades ago two extraordinary men had one vision – to significantly increase the impact of organizations serving those in need on Maui. Walter Cameron and Douglas Sodetani – turned their vision, simple in concept, into a reality. In so doing, they addressed a critical need by establishing a central location dedicated to providing affordable program and administrative spa

ce to non-profit organizations that supplied health, education and human services to Maui residents. With generous support from government agencies and private supporters, the J. Walter Cameron Center became home to sixteen
agencies in 1973. It is one of the most established social-service headquarters in the nation, and the oldest and largest in Hawaii. Interwoven within the fabric of the community, the JWCC today is recognized as being at the crossroads for programs and services for Maui
residents of all backgrounds. Even more, it has become a safe environment for people with special needs, and a home for the health and
social service organizations dedicated to serving them. It is where neighbors take care of neighbors and it is a manifestation of Maui’s deeply rooted value of kokua (helping others) and laulima (working together). Walter Cameron continues to be at the crossroads of the Maui nonprofit community:

20 Resident Agencies on site

Vision for the Future

Growth in population, as seen on Maui over the last 30 years, is reflected also in the increasing growth of nonprofits in the United States. Many of these organizations assume an ever-increasing and critical role in the health and social safety net of society. The Cameron Center must have both the infrastructure and vision to meet this need for current and future resident agencies. It, too, must undergo a growth in its purpose beyond providing physical space. The Cameron Center over the next 50 years will focus on not only upholding its original mission to provide space for Maui’s social
service agencies, but also on increasing its capacity to nurture the growth of its Resident Agencies. The next few years present a critical transition point for the Cameron Center: planning for and implementing a comprehensive campaign
that addresses the physical improvements required to incubate, support, and accelerate social good in the Maui community. Incubate
by providing best in class infrastructure and technology
at 21st century standards

Support
by meeting the administrative & operational needs of
Resident Agencies

Accelerate
by partnering with organizations & professionals to host Best Practice workshops on topics relevant to Resident Agencies and the general Maui community

A HISTORY OF SERVICE

While J. Walter Cameron was known for his contributions in Maui business and media, his greatest legacy was rooted in compassion for the community.
Through his work with Kula Sanitarium and local families, he witnessed the challenges faced by individuals living with illness and disabilities — and the lack of centralized support available to them on Maui. He saw families struggling to access care, resources, and services while navigating those hardships alone.

Moved by these experiences, Mr. Cameron envisioned a place where organizations could come together under one roof to better serve those in need. His belief was simple: every person deserved dignity, support, and hope.

In 1973, that vision became reality with the opening of the J. Walter Cameron Center — a collaborative space built to strengthen lives and support Maui’s community for generations to come.

Today, the Cameron Center continues to reflect his compassion and vision. What began as one man’s dream has grown into a six-building campus where agencies work together to provide support, resources, and hope for individuals and families across Maui. It remains a place of partnership, healing, and community — carrying forward the legacy J. Walter Cameron believed every person deserves.

For over 50 years, the J. Walter Cameron Center has served as a place of hope, connection, and support for Maui’s community.

Founded on the belief that people deserve accessible care and resources, the Center was created to bring nonprofit and social service agencies together in one location — making help easier to find and collaboration stronger.

Today, the Cameron Center is home to 26 agencies offering more than 100 programs that support over 65,000 individuals each year. By providing affordable space for nonprofits to grow and serve, the Center continues to connect Maui ‘ohana with the services and support they need to thrive.

We are proud to carry forward the vision of our founders by empowering people, strengthening families, and building a healthier Maui Nui – because we believe community is at the center of it all.

The Cameron Center is driving in style with new electric carts, helping us transport materials and equipment across campus while also assisting visitors with mobility needs. With 7 acres, 26 agencies, and more than 65,000 visitors each year, these additions play an important role in supporting the quality of life at the Center. Mahalo to the County of Maui and the Fred Baldwin Memorial Foundation for making this possible!
