Every stage of parenting brings new challenges, and strong family communication can make a meaningful difference.

In our Pōhai Makua Family Communication lesson, we talk about ways parents and caregivers can encourage open and honest conversations with their keiki. This can help keiki feel comfortable asking for guidance, resisting peer pressure, and avoiding alcohol and drug use.

Free online sessions are held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Participants who complete all seven sessions and the pre- and post-surveys will receive a certificate and a $40 e-gift card.

Ready to join us? Scan the QR code to register, and we’ll reach out to you soon!

Youth Week Day 5 🤙🏾

Our youth wrapped up Youth Week at Chang Farms! They spent the morning touring the farm with Deashia, learning about local agriculture, helping with farm work, and making fresh ʻulu gnocchi from scratch before getting to enjoy it together. 🌱🍽️

Mahalo to Deashia and everyone at Chang Farms for having us, taking the time to teach our youth, and sharing a little bit of what you do each day. We appreciate you!

Dive into Youth Week Day 4 🐠🌊

Yesterday our youth got to spend the day at the Maui Ocean Center, where they explored Hawaiʻi’s incredible marine life. During our coral lesson, they learned about different types of coral, how they eat, and the important role coral reefs play in keeping our ocean ecosystems healthy. Mahalo to the Maui Ocean Center for providing such a fun and educational experience for our youth.

Youth Week Day 3 🤠🐎

Yesterday our youth had an incredible day at Kaonoulu Ranch with Rowdy Rodeo, where they learned about Hawaiʻi’s paniolo heritage through fun, hands-on experiences.

The youth rotated between leatherworking with Lei Ana and a cattle dog demonstration with Kanoa, alongside Kaʻa and Kela, learning how working dogs help ranchers manage livestock. Kaʻa and Kela also brought their goats for a fun round of goat undecorating, where the youth raced to remove ribbons from the goats in a fast-paced, laughter-filled challenge!

Mahalo nui to Rowdy Rodeo for partnering with us and to Kaonoulu Ranch for providing such a beautiful place for our youth to learn. A special mahalo to Lei Ana, Kanoa, Kaʻa, and Kela for sharing your time, knowledge, and aloha. We are so grateful for an unforgettable day filled with learning, laughter, and new experiences! 🤎🐎🐐🌿

Youth Week Day 2 🌺🤙

Yesterday our youth had the opportunity to learn about the history, traditions, and significance of Makahiki games at Kanahā. After a morning of learning and friendly competition, they enjoyed some well deserved beach time filled with laughter and lots of fun. 🌊☀️

Mahalo nui to Kumu Uʻi and Violet for sharing your ʻike and teaching our youth about Makahiki games in such a fun and meaningful way. We appreciate you both!

🥊 Youth Week 2026 | Day 1

We had an awesome first day of Youth Week! Our youth kicked things off with a boxing and self-defense class led by 𝐋𝐚𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐧 𝐒𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐲 , where they learned basic techniques while building confidence and having fun. Afterward, we created their own tie-dye Youth Week shirts. 🌈

Mahalo, Lauren, for an amazing start to the week! We can’t wait for what’s next. 💙

National Ma*****na Facts Week | July 4–10

The choices you make today can shape your future.

Ma*****na may seem harmless, but using it at a young age can affect your brain while it is still growing and developing. It can make it harder to think clearly, stay focused in school, manage emotions, and stay motivated to reach your goals. Over time, it can also affect your relationships, mental health, and decision-making.

Starting ma*****na use at a young age may increase the risk of dependency, struggles with memory and learning, long-term anxiety or depression, difficulty managing responsibilities, and challenges reaching personal, educational, or career goals in adulthood.

Choosing to stay drug-free gives you the opportunity to keep a clear mind, build healthy habits, and stay in control of your future. It can help you stay focused on the things that matter most, like your education, sports, family, friendships, and personal goals.

The more you understand the facts, the stronger you become in making healthy choices. Your future is being built by the decisions you make today, so protect your peace, protect your goals, and protect the life you’re working toward.

June 26 is International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking

This day raises awareness about the dangers of drug use and why prevention matters, especially for youth.

During the teen years, the brain is still growing and developing, which makes it more vulnerable to the harmful effects of drugs and alcohol. Substance use can affect memory, focus, emotions, and decision-making. It can increase anxiety and depression and make it harder to cope with life’s challenges in healthy ways.

Substance use doesn’t just affect your health; it can affect every part of your life. It can impact school, sports, friendships, family relationships, and future goals. What may start as curiosity, stress, or pressure to fit in can sometimes lead to addiction, risky choices, legal trouble, and consequences that can follow you for years.

Choosing to stay drug-free is choosing to protect your future. It means protecting your mind, your health, your goals, and the opportunities ahead of you. Every healthy choice you make today helps build the life you want tomorrow.

For parents and caregivers, prevention starts at home. Having open conversations, building trust, and creating a safe space for your child to talk can make a lasting impact. If you are looking for support, guidance, and practical tools to strengthen family communication and help your child make healthy, drug-free choices, we invite you to check out Pohai Makua and follow our page to learn more about upcoming classes and resources. You can also register for our upcoming classes here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/VNVNDXT

Your future is worth protecting. Choose wisely. Choose you.
