The SHOPO Maui Chapter Annual Membership meeting is always a good time for our members and their families, but this year it was especially memorable. Leaders of police organizations from across the nation came to deliver a $40,000 check to the SHOPO Benevolent Fund to directly support our Maui officers who lost their homes to the fires.

Their in-person presence at the Maui meeting showed their true care for our officers and their families and allowed our Maui members to shake hands and give hugs to fellow law enforcement officers who stepped up to assist our officers in their time of need. Their $40,000 check was part of a larger $120,000 fundraising effort from law enforcement organizations nationwide.

Our police officers, firefighters, and medics have been true heroes. They fought the fires while their own homes burned. Our officers rushed into danger even though they were not given the appropriate safety equipment. SHOPO was honored to support our Maui officers by rushing that safety equipment directly to them and providing them with solid meals every day to ensure they had the sustenance to do the unspeakable job they are being asked to do every day.

Our officers are effective partners with our schools in keeping Maui students safe. The key to addressing an active assailant is to get to them quickly and directly. Unfortunately, due to staffing shortages, we are down 4 of the 12 authorized school resource officers, our first line of defense.
