Waikoloa Dry Forest Initiative

Waikoloa Dry Forest Initiative Dry Forest Conservation and Education The Waikoloa Dry Forest (WDF) is a remnant patch of lowland dry forest just south of Waikoloa Village on Hawai'i Island.

In 2007, a lease was obtained from the Waikoloa Village Association to steward 275 acres of this forest, which is now protected by a six-foot game exclusion fence. Due to years of forest degradation, there is very low tree diversity and the area is now dominated by invasive grasses. Ten Uhiuhi (Caesalpinia kavaiensis) trees occur within the fenced project area and three more trees are managed just

outside the fenced project. The project area encompasses 58 ancient Wiliwili (Erythrina sandwicensis) trees and many other juvenile tree and plant species.

Join us this Saturday (5.30) for a new type of Mālama ʻĀina workday activity: Debris Removal. Help to remove old material from decades past including old plastic, used tires, construction debris, and scrap metal. This crucial first step will help create the conditions needed for long term forest stewardship and support the return of a healthy, thriving dry forest ecosystem for generations to come.
