Waikoloa Dry Forest Initiative

Waikoloa Dry Forest Initiative Dry Forest Conservation and Education The Waikoloa Dry Forest (WDF) is a remnant patch of lowland dry forest just south of Waikoloa Village on Hawai'i Island.

In 2007, a lease was obtained from the Waikoloa Village Association to steward 275 acres of this forest, which is now protected by a six-foot game exclusion fence. Due to years of forest degradation, there is very low tree diversity and the area is now dominated by invasive grasses. Ten Uhiuhi (Caesalpinia kavaiensis) trees occur within the fenced project area and three more trees are managed just

outside the fenced project. The project area encompasses 58 ancient Wiliwili (Erythrina sandwicensis) trees and many other juvenile tree and plant species.

Wildfire is a leading threat to native ecosystems, including the Waikōloa Dry Forest. To help reduce risk ahead of New Year's Eve, we will be giving away fire extinguishers to our community.

The last fire that impacted the preserve was on January 1st, 2019, a stark reminder of how vulnerable our forest is to ignitions. Human activities, including fireworks, accidental roadside ignitions, and campfires, cause more than 99% of wildfires in Hawai'i.

This NYE, be safe and prepared while celebrating responsibly. Secure your fireworks area and keep a fire extinguisher & water source close by. Mahalo for your help protecting our native forest and community.
