🎓✨ Celebrating 50 Years of UH West Oʻahu! ✨🎓

Earlier this week, I was honored to join the University of Hawaiʻi–West Oʻahu ʻohana as they kicked off their 50th Anniversary Celebration Week, commemorating five decades of education, opportunity and service to our West Oʻahu community.

It was a beautiful celebration filled with oli, mele and reflections on UH West Oʻahu’s 50-year journey, along with a special video sharing stories and memories from faculty and alumni. The Hawaiʻi State Legislature and Honolulu City Council also recognized this significant milestone with proclamations honoring UH West Oʻahu and its impact on our community.

One of my favorite moments was adding a message to the university’s 50th anniversary time capsule, representing the Kapolei Chamber of Commerce and our West Oʻahu business community. The time capsule will be opened 25 years from now — such a meaningful opportunity to leave a message for the next generation of Pueo and West Oʻahu leaders. ♥️🖤

It was also wonderful to experience “In Flight: 50 Years of UH West Oʻahu,” a special exhibit highlighting the university’s history through photographs, documents and memorabilia — and, of course, to see so many friends, Chamber members and community partners gathered together to celebrate this milestone.

The Kapolei Chamber of Commerce has been a proud supporter and partner of UH West Oʻahu since our Chamber’s inception in 2008, and we are especially grateful to have UH West Oʻahu as one of our Leaders Circle Sponsors. Our organizations share a longstanding commitment to education, workforce development and creating opportunities for the people and businesses of West Oʻahu.

From its beginnings as West Oʻahu College in 1976 to the vibrant university and Kapolei campus it is today, 50 years is an incredible milestone!

♥️🖤 Congratulations, UH West Oʻahu! We are proud to celebrate with you and look forward to many more years of partnership, progress and impact in West Oʻahu.

Talk Story with U.S. Senator Brian Schatz 🇺🇸 | Advocacy in Action for West Oʻahu

Mahalo to U.S. Senator Brian Schatz and his team for joining the Kapolei Chamber of Commerce for our first Talk Story Session with Hawaiʻi’s senior U.S. senator.

Advocacy & Public Policy is one of the Kapolei Chamber’s core pillars, and opportunities like this help connect the issues being discussed in Washington, D.C. directly to the businesses and communities we serve in West Oʻahu.

Our moderated conversation covered federal priorities and funding, clean energy and resiliency, cost of living and affordable housing, artificial intelligence, small business support, economic and workforce development, infrastructure, transportation and healthcare.

Our audience Q&A expanded the conversation to include education, veterans affairs and other issues affecting our community.

A special mahalo to our Board Chair, Eliza Talbot of AES Hawaiʻi, who joined Kiran Polk in co-moderating the conversation and helping guide an engaging discussion with Senator Schatz.

Mahalo to the partners who helped make this event possible:

Presenting Sponsor: AES Hawaiʻi
Signature Sponsor: James Campbell Company
Community Sponsor: USTA Hawaiʻi Pacific Section

And mahalo to Kapolei Golf Club Kapolei Golf Club for hosting us!

This Talk Story was an opportunity for Kapolei Chamber members and invited guests to engage directly with one of Hawaiʻi’s federal leaders on issues important to our businesses and West Oʻahu communities.

🎬 Advocacy in Action
Supporting Hawaiʻi’s Film Industry

“Advocacy isn’t just about testifying at the Capitol. It’s about building partnerships, bringing people together, and creating opportunities that strengthen Hawaiʻi’s economy and support West Oʻahu businesses.”

That partnership was on full display as I was honored to represent the Kapolei Chamber of Commerce at Governor Josh Green’s signing ceremony for SB 2580, alongside the leadership of the Hawaiʻi Film Alliance. Together with industry leaders, businesses, labor organizations, and advocates across Hawaiʻi, we celebrated legislation that will strengthen Hawaiʻi’s film and television industry for years to come.

This was a priority advocacy bill for the Kapolei Chamber, and we were proud to work alongside the Hawaiʻi Film Alliance and many dedicated partners to help get it across the finish line.

For decades, West Oʻahu has been the backdrop for countless films, television shows, and commercials. When productions choose our communities, they create local jobs and invest millions of dollars in our economy, supporting hotels, restaurants, retailers, contractors, suppliers, caterers, and many other local businesses.

SB 2580 Highlights:

• 🎥 Raises the annual film tax credit cap to $60 million

• 👷 Encourages productions with 80% or more local hires

• 📺 Expands eligibility to include streaming platform productions

• 💼 Helps Hawaiʻi compete for larger film and television projects

Mahalo to Governor Josh Green, Senator Lynn DeCoite, Representative Greggor Ilagan, and every legislator who supported this effort.

A special mahalo to the Hawaiʻi Film Alliance for its leadership and to the businesses, organizations, unions, and advocates who came together to make this possible.

The Kapolei Chamber is proud to represent the West Oʻahu business community and advocate for policies that strengthen Hawaiʻi’s economy. When film comes to the West Side, our businesses, workers, families, and economy all benefit.
