Progress on construction has hit some snags, but we are still building and bringing people home. In an effort to help speed up construction, our people have been volunteering to install fence posts. Fences are very important because many villagers have pets who are like family to them and they need fences to bring them home. So far, we’ve moved 67 people from the harbor into homes up mauka, with a dozen more moving in the next few weeks.

The work continues. Construction is ongoing, but hit some delays, as many construction projects do…

Still, each month, we move some more people home, and clean up their camps. Lately, our backhoe has been down, so the trash has piled up, and we are sorry for the eyesore. We’ve been sorting the big piles by hand, and loading them into the bins that our nonprofit pays for. If anyone in the community is willing to lend a hand with their machines, please contact us.

Volunteers are still welcome to join us every Saturday at 10am. More at https://www.puuhonuaowaianae.com/kokua

Big mahalo to everyone who donated trash bags and gloves and attended one or more of our cleanups we appreciate you! 🙏🏽

Cleanups are still going strong but ***we need more hands***. Weather has been very rough for all of us both makai at the harbor and the new land up mauka, making things a little slower than usual, but we're pushing through.

If you want to help out, we host the public every Saturday from 10am and are open to other days--comment, message or email us [email protected] to schedule a day. Every bit helps. Aloha 🤙🏽

When the rain doesn’t let up, the work doesn’t stop.

Out here on the makai side of Puʻuhonua O Waiʻanae, we’ve been dealing with constant rain that’s made our usual cleanup work heavier and a lot more difficult. Wet debris in bins had to be dumped out to dry and repeated storms have turned these tasks into an ongoing effort.

Village residents and community have stepped up to volunteer where needed, hauling, loading, and moving things together. It takes more time now, but the commitment to taking care of the ʻāina and each other hasn’t changed.

We knew this season would be challenging. Living through it is something else entirely.

We keep going, one step at a time, and wish you all well.

Mahalo!

Mahalo to everyone who showed up and put in a lot of hard work at our village cleanup today.

From the PUC, RYSE, and Dojo volunteers, to those who provided food and refreshments, your support means a lot to us. Special thanks to the team who brought chainsaws and helped clear trees to address safety concerns from the two large storms.

To our POW support team, thank you for always being there, steady and dependable.

And mahalo to the Puʻuhonua o Waimānalo volunteers for standing with us.

Two years ago, we reached out. Recently, we received a hand up.

Mahalo to Senator Schatz for helping secure a $2 million federal grant to support construction at Puʻuhonua O Waiʻanae.

A large portion of this funding will go toward the infrastructure that makes permanent homes possible — water, sewer, and roadway. It’s not always the part you see, but it’s what allows the project to move forward. This investment helps ensure the village is built the right way for the long term.

Senator Schatz visited the Mauka Village last year, met with our team, and took the time to understand what’s needed. We appreciate the support and the trust in the work we’re doing.

The village continues to have an amazing network of supporters who step up to help build these relationships, and we mahalo them all.

Years ago, Mama (Twinkle) met with then-Lieutenant Gov. Josh Green, and shared about our village. That became part of the State's inspiration for its Kauhae Initiative. Recently, POW Leadership visited the state Kauhale Hoʻokahi Leo. We are always willing to learn new ways of making our village stronger, and we were grateful to hear from staff and residents who are operating the kauhale. Building connections is what Mama always wanted us to do. Her legacy motivates us to keep pushing forward!

In mid November, we met with the DLNR Director and other State leaders, and worked out an agreement where our village would clean and clear areas of Puʻuhonua O Waiʻanae (POW) makai ourselves, instead of DLNR coming with heavy equipment and enforcement to “sweep” our people.

Since that meeting, we've cleared and cleaned dozens of campsites. If construction keeps pace and units are ready, we move people up to our Waiʻanae Valley property. If units are not ready for occupancy, as an interim step, we sometimes move some people away from areas that DLNR has prioritized for clearing to other areas of the Harbor.

All the areas your see here used to have camps. We are making progress at POW makai, and we thank the many people that have come to help.

Mahalo nui!
