Aloha kākou, mahalo for checking in on us after Hurricane Lala ⛈️ We’re extremely grateful to say that our team, animals, and the farm are doing ok with the biggest damage happening to our trees 🌳 There are lots of branch debris on the farm to clean up, fruits that got blown off, and some of our trees got uprooted and therefore have to be removed. It’s interesting, one of the translations of lālā in Hawaiian is branch, limb, bough, to branch out, form branches, diverge.

It’s sad to see some of our beloved trees get toppled over and to see lots of fruits that we were saving for our upcoming U-Pick on the ground, but overall, we’re thankful for our safety and that there’s no major structural damage that we can see at the moment. Times like this remind us of our resilience and our capacity to rebuild and holomua together. Much aloha to everyone and we hope you’re all doing ok 🙏🏽

From seed to ʻōpū, the practice of growing food and sharing it with others is a true labor of love and an intentional way of bringing people together. What a gift!

Our U-Pick event is back on August 29 just in time for the start of the new school year! This U-Pick event will be a special one as we partner with HSTA to do a harvest and ʻOhana Resource day on the farm. Attendees can harvest available fruits and vegetables, kōkua our mahiʻai, connect with different organizations in our community, and we will have a keiki activity station.

There is no pre-registration required and everything is by donation. Take what you need, give what you can. Hele mai!

Summer for us is a time of reflection and preparation for the upcoming year as we gear up to run our core programs. Last school year, our dedicated staff were able to work on nine unique farm projects with all grade levels at Makaha Surfers through our Nā Keiki O Ka ʻĀina program. Mahalo to Leia, Kupu member at Mākaha Elementary, for creating this summary presentation of these projects! It’s amazing to see how many engaging activities can be done on our farm with keiki, the learning is endless!
