Every ride takes timing.
Every turn takes communication.
Every wave takes a crew moving as one.

The Ho’oma’a Wa’a Invitational is more than a competition. It is a celebration of Hawaiian ocean culture, community, and the art of canoe surfing — a tradition carried forward by the paddlers, steersmen, families, and watermen who continue to keep it alive.

The Ho‘oma‘a Wa‘a Invitational is more than a canoe surfing contest. It is a gathering — of crews, families, steersmen, paddlers, kūpuna, keiki, and community.

From the canoes rigged on the beach, to the paddle over to Maʻili Point, to the laughter, stories, and shared respect after every heat, this event carries something deeper than competition.

It is about coming together to celebrate the art of canoe surfing, honor the knowledge passed down through generations, and keep this living tradition alive for the future.

This sport is alive.
But it’s more than a sport.
It’s our culture.

Join us for the 3rd Annual Ho’oma’a Wa’a Invitational and witness one of Hawaiʻi’s most powerful ocean traditions.

Canoe surfing is beautiful, but it is not easy. Every wave demands trust, awareness, and respect — for the canoe, for your crew, for the ocean, and for everyone in the lineup.

Behind every ride is a crew working as one. Behind every wipeout is the instinct to make sure everyone is safe, recover the canoe, and get back to the lineup.

That is what makes canoe surfing so powerful. It is not just about the wave. It is about courage, teamwork, and the knowledge passed down through generations of Hawaiian watermen.

Join us for the 3rd Annual Ho’oma’a Wa’a Invitational and witness one of Hawaiʻi’s most exciting ocean traditions.

There was a time when the art of canoe surfing was nearly lost.”

For generations, Hawaiian watermen navigated waves not for competition, but out of necessity. The skills required to read the ocean, work together as a crew, and safely bring a canoe through the surf were passed down through generations. Today, those same skills continue to live on through the art of canoe surfing.

What was once on the verge of disappearing is now thriving once again—thanks to the paddlers, steersmen, families, and communities dedicated to perpetuating this unique part of Hawaiian culture.

The Ho’oma’a Wa’a Invitational is more than a competition. It’s a celebration of tradition, knowledge, and the people committed to carrying it forward for future generations.
