There was a time when the art of canoe surfing was nearly lost.”
For generations, Hawaiian watermen navigated waves not for competition, but out of necessity. The skills required to read the ocean, work together as a crew, and safely bring a canoe through the surf were passed down through generations. Today, those same skills continue to live on through the art of canoe surfing.
What was once on the verge of disappearing is now thriving once again—thanks to the paddlers, steersmen, families, and communities dedicated to perpetuating this unique part of Hawaiian culture.
The Ho’oma’a Wa’a Invitational is more than a competition. It’s a celebration of tradition, knowledge, and the people committed to carrying it forward for future generations.
