Our Alaka'i and Kīpuka Interns recently returned from an unforgettable huaka'i to Hawai'i Island. Day 1 took us to the luapele where we explored and strengthened our cultural connections and deepened our understanding of place. The next two days were spent in the awe-inspiring Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge. There, we:
🍃Learned about native manu and lā'au
🌿Outplanted māmane to restore native habitats
🌾Investigated the impacts of invasive gorse
🌳Visited the oldest 'ōhi'a tree in the forest
🐦‍⬛Rose before dawn to birdwatch endemic species
🛠Engaged with inspiring conservation professionals who shared their journeys and passion for protecting Hawai'i's ecosystems.
Mahalo to everyone who made this experience possible. Our Interns returned with full hearts, muddy boots, and a renewed and strengthened kuleana to Aloha and mālama 'āina!

Alaka'i and Kipuka Interns - Day 1 Hawai'i Island

Our Lei Kaiāulu-Alaka'i and Kīpuka summer interns spent the day learning hands-on at GoFarm Hawai'i in Waimānalo with Kumu Rachel. From exploring the benefits of cover crops to removing invasive morning glory from a corn field, these haumāna are deepening their 'ike and pilina to 'āina through service and sustainability.
