Fort Gibson Lake Association
The Fort Gibson Lake Association (FGLA) Board of Directors is energized about the future of Fort Gibson Lake and the communities that surround it, according to Board President Charlie Burns.
“We’re at a turning point,” Burns said. “Like many organizations, FGLA has faced challenges over the past few years, including declining membership and the reality that our Tourism Center, built in 2002, had simply reached the end of its effective life.” Similar to the Muskogee Welcome Center on Highway 69, which closed several years ago, the Fort Gibson Lake Tourism Center is no longer operating.
Burns explained that changes in how people travel and gather information played a major role in the decision. “Digital technology and social media have completely changed how visitors plan their trips. Paper brochures and traditional, face-to-face visitor centers just aren’t how most travelers operate anymore,” he said. As a result, the land has been sold to a developer and the building will be removed. “We were proud to donate the trees and flagpole to the City of Wagoner, and park benches, furniture, and other items were given to local nonprofit organizations so they could continue serving the community.”
Looking ahead, FGLA is embracing a new chapter; one focused on technology, stronger online presence, and rebuilding meaningful relationships with local community leaders, as well as federal, state, and local partners. “This is about re-imagining what FGLA can be,” Burns said. “And we don’t want to do that alone.”
The Board is actively seeking input from the community and welcomes ideas from anyone who cares about Fort Gibson Lake. “If you have thoughts, ideas, or a vision for how we can make the lake experience even better, we want to hear from you. Community input will help guide our next steps.”
“This is a fresh start,” Burns added. “With the community’s help, we’re excited to build something stronger, more relevant, and better positioned for the future.”
