Because everyone knows at heart that “humane slaughter” is a lie! What, are you gonna give the cow compliments as you string her upside down and slit her throat? Say a little prayer? What the hell does that do for the INDIVIDUAL being murdered against her will?

Just take everything we do to animals in a slaughterhouse and imagine that it was your dog there instead. Your sweet, loyal, affectionate companion of years who was getting dismembered. As soon as you start thinking about the feelings of the VICTIM, you realize that everything we say about “humane slaughter” is nothing more than a desperate, pathetic excuse to keep hurting animals.

It seems extreme to go vegan. But all we’re talking about is giving up eating animals’ dead bodies and their bodily secretions. Versus massacring them in bloody, horrific ways by the trillions every year.

It was making this connection that led me to go vegan on a Texas cattle ranch. I couldn’t stand it no more. I fell in love with a calf like she was my own baby - and then selling the other babies on the ranch was absolutely not an option. I stood up to my husband, we fought for months - and now 11 years later, we are a proud vegan animal sanctuary in Texas.

Help us take this story far and wide!!

Most people don’t know how sick and depraved this industry truly is - but if they watch this footage by Joey Carbstrong there’s no denying it.

Workers looked at their phones as they repeatedly shocked a confined cow over and over as the cow, surrounded by blood, scrambles desperately for escape. They later decapitate her while she is still conscious.

People need to see this s**t. This was all done in Hartshead slaughterhouse in Greater Manchester, England, which does halal and kosher slaughter. These are supposed to be more “humane” methods of slaughter - but I didn’t see a shred of humanity here.

This stuff is really hard to watch - but we need people to see it to wake up from the lie of “humane slaughter.” No animal wants to die - all of them fight for their lives. To kill an animal is murder.

We used to sell calves to this bloody mass murder industry. Until I fell in love with one of them and the horror of what we were doing hit me head on. There was no more justification, no more excuse. We went vegan and became a farmed animal sanctuary instead of a cattle ranch in Texas.

Fireball came out of a scheme that teaches folks to love animals and then let them go to slaughter like that’s just the way it has to be. But this time, compassion got in the way (Thank God it did!)

The family who raised him chose to see Fireball for what he really was: not a chart of meat but a life. And when they could no longer take care of him, they made sure he came here, where he would be safe.

That’s what happens when the old traditions start to crack. You just stop seeing animals as stuff and start seeing them for who they are.

What I am doing in this photo is forbidden on a working cattle ranch. You don’t name them, you don’t love them, you do NOT cuddle them. And there’s a reason why. They must remain objects to be used. Get too close - and you start to question your actions. So ranchers keep their distance as best they can.

But some fall through the cracks. I have met ranchers and their wives who have told me in secret about catching feelings for one of their animals and the agony they feel as they wait for the inevitable. In fact, we rescued a calf named Buster from a rancher just like that who connected deeply with the little guy and couldn’t bring himself to sell him for slaughter.

It’s what happened to me too when I cared for a calf named Rowdy Girl - who completely changed how I saw animals. Through her, I learned how incredibly sentient, feeling and incredible these animals that society deems “dumb” and “unfeeling” truly are.

Poor baby with a target on her forehead. What did she do to deserve this? Nothing. Animal ag picks the gentlest, sweetest creatures on the planet - the ones least able to fight back - and aggressively and mercilessly exploits that gentleness.

What does that say about us, y’all?

This is not what God wants for us. He desires mercy, compassion and self-sacrifice - not animal sacrifice. Why would He want us to murder His creation?

Animal ag is a stain on humanity’s soul.

Once I saw that while living on my husband’s cattle ranch, I could not unsee it. I saw the cruelty we inflicted, by stealing the babies to be sold to certain doom. Many folks, when they start to recognize their own participation in cruelty, shut down that awareness. They put on blinders and create excuses for themselves. But I couldn’t do it - I saw too clearly and I couldn’t delude myself. And that put me in a real bind. My husband and I nearly divorced but by the grace of God, we made it through to the other side - a vegan sanctuary for farmed animals and happily married still.

Now I tell our story to anyone and everyone, spreading compassion while rescuing animals who have received none.

The USDA is considering proposals that would increase line speeds at chicken slaughterhouses from 140 to 175 birds per minute, and remove speed limits altogether at pig facilities — a rate that amounts to nearly three birds killed every single second.

This is devastating. Increasing line speeds causes more mistakes - and more conscious chickens when the knife hits their throats.

At what point do we hit rock bottom? At what point do people say “enough”?

While no murder is justified, increasing the speed of murder will lead to an increase in suffering for these poor animals who have done absolutely nothing to deserve this. And there will be more accidents amongst workers and risk of contamination - a trend we have already seen rising.

This world truly disgusts me. It’s not enough to kill millions of chickens every day - now we have to do it 3 seconds faster??? Something is seriously broken.

We used to be part of these animal killing industries. My husband had a cattle ranch until I had a vegan awakening and went crazy - upending our lives in order to create a sanctuary for farmed animals instead of a working multi-generational cattle ranch. I fought him like crazy on it. And I won. He’s vegan now too.

We truly can create positive change - but it involves strength, sacrifice and following our truest heart.
