In recognition of Indigenous Peoples’ Day, join us to hear the amazing panelist including our founder Lucille R. Contreras, as they share insightful and rooted information at the University of Colorado Boulder on Wednesday, October 14, 2026.

This meaningful gathering brings together Indigenous leaders, scholars, and advocates from across the Americas to explore Land Back initiatives, Indigenous-led buffalo restoration, cultural preservation, and the importance of reconnecting Indigenous communities with their ancestral lands.

To us, (Iyane’e) buffalo, embody generations of cultural knowledge, ecological stewardship, resilience, and relationships that continue to shape Indigenous identity and lifeways.

We are honored to see this important work represented on a national platform and to stand alongside those advocating for Indigenous sovereignty, restoration, and cultural continuity.

On this day, we recognize histories too often overlooked, honor enduring connections to the land, and celebrate the strength, cultures, and contributions of Indigenous communities.

May our recognition extend beyond today through listening, learning, and supporting Indigenous voices. Our stories, knowledge, and presence deserve to be honored every day.

What began as a calling to help restore the buffalo to the land has grown into something much bigger: reconnecting Indigenous people to culture, food sovereignty, community, healing, and the land itself.

National Day for Truth & Reconciliation

In 1973, six-year-old Phyllis Webstad arrived at a residential school wearing a brand-new orange shirt. It was taken from her on her first day. Her story later became the foundation of Orange Shirt Day and a symbol of the identity, culture, language, family connection, and dignity taken from generations of Indigenous children.

In the United States, federal Indian boarding school policies stretched from the early 1800s into the 20th century. The U.S. Department of the Interior has identified 417 federal Indian boarding schools across 37 states or then-territories and confirmed that at least 973 American Native children died while attending federally operated or supported schools. At least 74 marked or unmarked burial sites have also been identified at 65 school locations.

These schools were part of broader assimilation policies that removed children from their families and communities and sought to suppress Indigenous languages, beliefs, traditions, and identities. The effects of that history continue to be felt across families and communities today.

Orange Shirt Day reminds us of a truth that must continue to be carried forward:

Every Child Matters.

Today, we honor survivors, remember the children who never returned home, and recognize the generations of Indigenous families who continue to preserve their languages, cultures, traditions, and communities.

Support can go beyond wearing orange. Take time to:
🔸Learn the history of the Indigenous peoples and Tribal Nations connected to the place where you live.
🔸Listen to and amplify Indigenous voices, especially when learning about boarding school history and its ongoing impact.
🔸Support Native-led organizations, businesses, artists, educators, and cultural initiatives.
🔸Respect Tribal sovereignty, languages, traditions, and cultural knowledge.
🔸Share accurate history and encourage others to learn from Indigenous-led and primary sources.

Today is a day to listen, learn, remember, and carry that knowledge forward. 🧡

Know a young person on the Gulf Coast with big ideas?

The Gulf Youth Ambassador Program (GYAP) is looking for teens ages 14-18 who want to do something real for their community. Whether it's climate resilience, restoration, fisheries, education, environmental justice, storytelling, or water and air quality, this is a chance to take an idea and actually make it happen.

Selected ambassadors get mentorship, a project stipend, travel assistance, and hands-on leadership experience. The kind of skills that stick with you long after the program ends.

Good news: the deadline has been extended to October 4, 2026!
