Hi everyone,
I am so happy that I’m finally able to share the exciting news with all of you!! (Sorry in advance for the long post.)
The amazing team at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital has approved our request to donate Nintendo Switch consoles for the pediatric oncology floor. I really wanted to make sure that these gaming systems weren’t just being sent home with one kid. I wanted them to be continuously in use by any and all kids inpatient on the oncology floor.
To do this, the wonderful team at Lurie’s had to pilot the program first to make sure that safety and cleanliness protocols could be followed as well ensuring that kids could fairly and safely use the gaming systems in their rooms.
I also wanted to be sure that we weren’t adding extra stress to nurses and staff because let me tell you, they already do A LOT to help the kids! It was also important to me that we provide everything that Lurie’s needs to be able to make this a successful donation.
I was able to meet with my executive board last week and we have full approval!! We will start by donating five complete gaming systems, a storage/lock box/charging station, extra chargers, SD cards, games, and extra controllers so kids and their families can play together while they’re in the hospital. Since there are extra protocols on the oncology floor, they’ve asked us to start with five systems so we don’t overwhelm the staff or the process. Once we get those going, we can buy more units…and I hope to be able to provide a Nintendo Switch for all 48 rooms on the pediatric oncology floor. It truly was my favorite past time when I was inpatient at Lurie’s and that is where me and my family played a LOT of Mario Kart!
I really want to thank the director of children and family services, the director of technology, and the director of donations at Lurie’s who have put in so much work and spent so much time with me to make this happen in the best and the most thoughtful way possible. I also want to thank my board members, family and friends for being with me every step of the way. But I especially want to thank all of YOU for all of your support and patience with me as we navigate this project.
I am so excited that this is happening and I hope you are too! I will continue to keep you all posted here, and hope to have news of our next event soon!!
Love,
Effie :)
