It is with a Heavy Heart, that we are saddened to inform the public, that Richard Gorddard, Founder of the Twin Forks Chapter of the NRHS, has passed away. Always a Native long Islander, Rich was born in 1961 in Huntington, NY. From a young age, his passion for railroading, and history was a driving force for his passions later on in life. In February 1996, he alongside his friends, founded this Chapter. Over the years, Rich was fundamental in bringing this organization to the status it is at now, under his leadership we acquired multiple historic railroad cars, and obtained our yard in Riverhead.

If you would like to pay your respects to Rich, services will be held on Thursday, May 28, 2026 from 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM at the McManus-Lorey Funeral Home, 2084 Horseblock Road, Medford, NY 11763.

The Twin Forks NRHS is looking to fundraise for a small goal of only $400 dollars. If 20 viewers donated $20 each, the goal would be met and work can start immediately. As part of our Chapter's 30th Anniversary, as well as , this repaint can serve as a double celebration. Our Spreader is a historic and unique piece of railroad equipment, and we would like to see it cosmetically restored for the Summer.

Any Donations can be made at the bottom of our Website: www.twinforksnrhs.org

On April 11th the Twin Forks Chapter of the NRHS returned to Hillside Support Facility. After a five year hiatus, the chapter brought in a fantastic group of Members new and old, and were given an incredible tour of Hillside Support Facility.

Hillside is the Long Island Rail Road’s main Equipment Maintenance Yard for Electric Units and occasionally Diesel Coaches. To Celebrate 30 years of Twin Forks, the Chapter was granted access to the facility by the LIRR.

We thank the LIRR for their amazing support, and the employees of the Railroad who made this dream for some of us come true. If you’d like to participate in future events similar to this, you can sign up to the Twin Forks Chapter of the NRHS via our Website.

As part of an ongoing effort to responsibly manage its collection and align resources with its long-term preservation goals, the Twin Forks Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society has undertaken a review of its equipment roster, including our Boston & Maine passenger coach. Built in 1935, it is one of 3 remaining American Flyer coaches in existence. Twin Forks has determined that the coach no longer fits within the scope of its active restoration priorities and available resources. In keeping with a commitment to thoughtful stewardship, the car will be formally deaccessioned and made available to qualified preservation groups capable of ensuring its continued care and interpretation. Should the car not be picked up by another preservation group, plans for alternatives will be made, plans the Twin Forks NRHS does not want to pursue. Please spread the word about this sale, we believe this coach is capable of being restored, with the proper resources, funding, and facilities that our Chapter does not have.

This year marks the 30th Anniversary of the Twin Forks Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society, a milestone that reflects three decades of dedication to the preservation and restoration of Long Island’s railroad heritage. Since our founding, the chapter has focused on hands-on craftsmanship, historical preservation, and the sharing of knowledge through active restoration projects and community involvement. None of this would be possible without the continued commitment of our volunteers and members, whose time, money skills have sustained the chapter for thirty years.

As we recognize this anniversary, we are also pleased to share some exciting announcements for the year ahead! Starting today, the Twin Forks Chapter newsletter has resumed publication and will be available for public viewing throughout the remainder of the year on our website. This has been something requested by many people and we are happy to bring it back.

We are also in the early stages of launching a new line of HO scale models! Soon to be released are our LIRR P72 coaches and N22 cabooses. In addition, the chapter is also planning the creation of a digital online archive, which will allow some of our historic documents, photographs, and records to be accessible to the public for the first time ever.

Finally, we are preparing a series of special events and collaborative projects to take place throughout the year in recognition of our 30th anniversary. Further details will be announced as plans are finalized.

Thirty years in, the work continues, and the future is just getting started. Happy Birthday Twin Forks! πŸ₯³
