Visiting Steamtown's 2026 Railfest? So are we! The Twin Forks NRHS will have a tent with artifacts and merchandise on display. We will only be there on September 5th and 6th, but the festival is open on Friday! Steamtown will be hosting train rides, tank rides, and other amazing activities! If you're in the area, stop by!

🚨RIVERHEAD RAILROAD FESTIVAL 2026!🚨

🗓️ MARK YOUR CALENDARS for our annual Riverhead Railroad Festival is ALMOST HERE!!! Thanks to the efforts of the Railroad Museum of Long Island and Suffolk County, we are excited to celebrate the 30TH ANNIVERSARY of the opening of our museum in 1996!

🚂 This year’s Railroad Festival will take place:
Saturday-Sunday August 29-30th (10am-4pm)
At the Railroad Museum of Long Island in Riverhead, New York.

𝐓𝐖𝐈𝐍 𝐅𝐎𝐑𝐊𝐒 𝐆𝐎𝐄𝐒 𝐓𝐎 𝐅𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐇 𝐏𝐎𝐍𝐃

On August 15th the Twin Forks Chapter of the NRHS toured the New York and Atlantic Railway's Fresh Pond Yard. Eager members and new faces tagged along for a very informational tour of the headquarters of Long Island Freight Railroad.

Fresh Pond is NY&A's Headquarters located in Queens. Formerly a LIRR Yard, it now houses an Engine Shop, Offices, and Interchange with CSX. To Celebrate 30 years of Twin Forks, the Chapter was granted access to the facility by NYAR.

We were also extremely privileged to see NY&A #270, now a America250 Heritage Unit. Thank you James “Sparky” Nunes, our host for the opportunity to take photos with the locomotive.

𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐈𝐍 𝐂𝐎𝐀𝐂𝐇 𝐋𝐎𝐎𝐊𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝐍𝐄𝐖 𝐇𝐎𝐌𝐄!

Built in 1935, it is 1 of 5 remaining American Flyer coaches in existence. Twin Forks has determined that the coach no longer fits within the scope of its active restoration priorities and available resources. This car is available to be donated to qualified preservation groups capable of ensuring its continued care and interpretation. Should the car not be picked up by another preservation group, plans for alternatives will have to be made. Please spread the word about this sale, we believe this coach is capable of being restored, with the proper resources, funding, and facilities that our Chapter does not have.

𝐉𝐎𝐑𝐃𝐀𝐍 𝐒𝐏𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐃𝐄𝐑 𝐔𝐏𝐃𝐀𝐓𝐄

Throughout the month of July, Volunteers of the Twin Forks Chapter of the NRHS have been slowly making progress on our 1948 Snowplow, the "Jordan Spreader" No. W-93. With Summer in full swing, it's been tough to squeeze in free time between work, summer school, and vacations, but we're thrilled to show you what we've been up to!

The Spreader was sanded down in early July, removing clumps of old paint and rust, then a coat of grey primer was applied later that day. Later, two coats of white paint were applied to the plow, serving as the base layer for our American Flag inspired design. Yesterday, the red stripes were applied to the bottom half of the plow, with a Blue top half, soon to be adorned with 50 Stars.

We'd like to thank our dedicated core of volunteers who have come out to help with this project!

𝐇𝐄𝐋𝐏 𝐔𝐒 𝐂𝐄𝐋𝐄𝐁𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐄 𝐀𝐌𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐂𝐀 𝟐𝟓𝟎!

This Sunday June 28th, come lend a hand at the Riverhead Yard! The paint has been purchased, and we are ready to begin the cosmetic restoration of our 1948 Jordan Spreader, with the addition of a patriotic spin to it! Applied to the front of the Snowplow the American Flag in all her glory will be painted. If you haven't joined us before, please don't be afraid to come down and join us, we would be happy to have you!

The Work Session will begin around 11am at the Riverhead Yard. Parking is available at our location or across the street. Food and Drinks will also be provided throughout the day.

It is with a Heavy Heart, that we are saddened to inform the public, that Richard Gorddard, Founder of the Twin Forks Chapter of the NRHS, has passed away. Always a Native long Islander, Rich was born in 1961 in Huntington, NY. From a young age, his passion for railroading, and history was a driving force for his passions later on in life. In February 1996, he alongside his friends, founded this Chapter. Over the years, Rich was fundamental in bringing this organization to the status it is at now, under his leadership we acquired multiple historic railroad cars, and obtained our yard in Riverhead.

If you would like to pay your respects to Rich, services will be held on Thursday, May 28, 2026 from 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM at the McManus-Lorey Funeral Home, 2084 Horseblock Road, Medford, NY 11763.

$𝟒𝟎𝟎 𝐍𝐄𝐄𝐃𝐄𝐃 𝐓𝐎 𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐄 𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐈𝐍

The Twin Forks NRHS is looking to fundraise for a small goal of only $400 dollars. If 20 viewers donated $20 each, the goal would be met and work can start immediately. As part of our Chapter's 30th Anniversary, as well as , this repaint can serve as a double celebration. Our Spreader is a historic and unique piece of railroad equipment, and we would like to see it cosmetically restored for the Summer.
