After 20+ years of Center advocacy, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has finally proposed Endangered Species Act protections for endangered dunes sagebrush lizards.
These lizards live in a small part of Texas and New Mexico — which sadly includes the Permian Basin, one of the fastest growing oil and gas fields in the world. They are further imperiled by burgeoning sand mining operations in the area — a secondary impact of the oil and gas industry, which uses the sand for fracking.
“Dunes sagebrush lizards are marvelously adapted for life in extreme environments, but they need our help to survive the oil and gas industry’s destruction,” said the Center's Michael Robinson. “The Service needs to move quickly to implement these long-overdue protections.”
