•Tyre Nichols•
On January 10th, Tyre Nichols was just 29 years old and on his way home from taking pictures of the sky for his photography site, when he was pulled over by five Memphis police officers (Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills Jr., and Justin Smith ) for a simple traffic stop.
The officers accused Tyre of reckless driving (although no evidence of this claim has been sustained), and then attempted to get Tyre out of the car without warrant. Tyre refused to get out of the car, as the officers were acting violent and had no reason to arrest or search him. After dragging him out of the car, they then proceeded to brutally beat Tyre to death. He did not fight back at all, yet the officers continued to punch, kick, push, and taze Tyre. Tyre was stopped less than 100 yards from his home, which he shared with his mother and stepfather. In his last words he begged for his mother and tried to run to her house for safety. After the beating, he was rushed to the hospital, where he died 3 days later from a broken neck, cardiac arrest, and internal bleeding.
All five officers involved in the murder of Tyre Nichols have been arrested and charged with aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, official misconduct, and second degree murder.
Tyre was described by everyone that knew him as truly gentle, kind, and compassionate. His mother said “He had never been in trouble with the law, not even a parking ticket. He was an honest man, a wonderful son, and kind to everyone. He was quirky and true to himself, and his loss will be felt nationally.” He was a father to his four year old son, he loved him mother so much he had a tattoo of her on his arm, and he worked at FedEx with his stepdad. He lived with his mother and stepdad, and ate dinner with them every night. Tyre loved to skateboard, dreamed of becoming a photographer, and loved to take pictures of the sunset every night.
It is truly devastating and disgusting these officers who were put in place to protect people would use their position to unjustly and brutally murder a kind, innocent man. Tyre’s murder shows that police brutality is real and rampant in America.
Tyre’s family has asked everyone to watch the video of this injustice in order to spread awareness , but warns the content is horrific. Tyre’s mom stated “I am asking people to protest in peace after its release. I don’t want us burning up our cities, and tearing up the streets because that’s not what my son stood for.”
