M-W Sweeps Dan Rose Tourney Titles
A touch of fall was spiced with bright sunshine as Madrid-Waddington hosted the second round of the 2018 Dan Rose Memorial Tournament on Saturday.
A perfect day for soccer saw the M-W Boys and Girls sweep tournament titles before a strong contingent from the communities of Madrid and Waddington where the memories of Dan Rose’s greatness and genuine humanity will always be remembered.
“Madrid-Waddington Soccer continues to pay homage to Dan’s accomplishments and more importantly, his eternal spirit. Dan’s love of life along with his commitment to family and compassion continues to inspire us all,” said a statement from the school district.
M-W Boys Coach Ryan Robinson said the tournament was also a perfect time to honor the continued contributions by the Rose family to the student-athletes of the district. Each first year soccer player receives a travel bag at the tournament and to date 78 $1000 Dan Parker Rose Memorial Scholarships have been presented to M-W college bound seniors.
A major fund-raiser for the scholarship fund has been the Dan Rose Memorial Golf Tournament.
“The games were important today but the most important thing is to honor the Rose family and what they have done,” said Robinson.
“Seventy eight scholarships from the scholarship fund is outstanding.
BOYS FINALS

“Who got the goals and assists today isn’t important but it was nice that so many different people got involved in the scoring,” said M-W Coach Ryan Robinson.
“What is important is that we established possession and control right away and maintained our style right through the game. Especially considering that we open league play against an outstanding Brushton-Moira team”
Jacob Murphy, Brennan Harmer and Nicholas Burns also scored and Eric MCall and Will Murphy added assists.
Nate Moulton stopped three shots in goal. Tristan Simmons scored the lone Morristown goal redirecting a nice cross from Cael Woodcock and Kade Marshal handled 16 shots in net. “ Another good thing about today’s game was that a lot of guys who will play together in future got a chance to get out there together,” said Coach Robinson.
N-N 3 - H-D 0: The Flyers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the consolation game sparked by Trent Tatum who scored the first goal from Bodie Molnar and set up Sean Derrochie for the third goal. Tyler Trimboli scored the second goal from Reed Gravlin.

GIRLS FINALS
Sydney Hosmer made it a memorable birthday as she scored in the first and 16th minute of the second half as 2-0 Madrid-Waddington downed Lisbon 2-0 and handed the Knights their first loss after a 4-0 start.
Both goals came off quick strikes countering Lisbon scoring threats.
Hosmer took a through pass from Stephenie Curran and scored the winning goal with a quick move down the middle and a shot off the left goalpost.
The insurance goal came with lightning quickness as Alexis Sullivan controlled a defensive clear, carried the ball through the midfield and found Emma Plumley on the right wing for a quick run and pass to Hosmer for a sharp angle shot into the cords.
“Sydney Hosmer scored both goals and it was nice she could do that on her birthday. I think having the wind in the second half made a difference for us. We really passed the ball well and scored two pretty goals,” said M-W Coach Justin Richards.
“Maggie Murphy and Kellsie Tiernan played outstanding defense for us. Maggie did a good job marking Emily Jordan who is going to be a a very strong player for years to come and Kellsie is so aggressive and goes to everything. But she is always at the right place.
In matchup of two stellar goalkeepers Morgan Burns made eight stops in the M-W net and Hope Walker finished with six saves for Lisbon.
H-D 6 - N-N 0: Makenna Smith scored a natural hat trick in the first half as the 1-3 Demons secured their first win of the season in the consolation game. Smith scored from in the 20th minute and then netted unassisted tallies over the next 12 minutes.
“Makenna Smith really came out strong tonight and they just couldn’t handle her,” said H-D Coach Sarah Reed.
