Waco Knights of Saint Andrew, Order of the Thistle Our Mission

The Knights of St. Andrew is made of an elite unit select Scottish Rite Masons. The Knights of St. Knights of St.

Andrew exist as a service organization on behalf of all members of their Consistory. They are under the immediate supervision of the Secretary of their Scottish Rite Consistory and provide services where they are needed. This includes, but not limited to, aiding the Tylers, acting as greeters, providing es**rt services for dignitaries or for special events created for the ladies during reunions or

other functions, serving as guides, assisting the Scottish degree work, helping present the Colors. Andrew also assist in the calling committees, participate in parades or civic activities, promote fund-raising events, and aid in any special event. The list can continue on as new ideas and concepts are developed to meet needs and goals. Their flexibility and enthusiasm make the Knights of St. Andrew one of the Valley’s most active and desirable organizations. It is an excellent way to nurture and develop future leaders as they learn their organizational and leadership skills, explore the inner structures of their Scottish Rite Centers, and thus gain a deeper admiration for our Order and Brethren who work in Freemasonry as a whole.

The June 2025 calendar image is The Marquis de Lafayette laying the cornerstone of the Bunker Hill monument, 1825, by British master engraver William Harcourt Hooper. Hooper’s contemporary Charles Harold St John Hornby called him “almost the last of the old school of wood-engravers and a very fine craftsman.”

Before setting out on his tour of the Southern and Western states in late February 1825, Lafayette had committed himself to laying the monument’s cornerstone in his role as a Mason on June 17, 1825, the fiftieth anniversary of the Battle of Bunker Hill.

Due to excellent route planning and more than a little good luck, he arrived in Boston at the conclusion of that arduous four-month, 3,000-mile journey on the afternoon of June 15 and immediately met with the committee planning the ceremony.

Auguste Levasseur recorded the day’s impressive events in his travelogue. He observed that the procession to the monument site was composed of about 7,000 people, including 2,000 Freemasons. Two hundred veterans of the American Revolution marched at the head, while 40 others followed in eight open carriages. He estimated the crowd that had gathered to witness the ceremony at a remarkable “200,000 citizens gathered from all the States of the Union.”

When the veterans were seated at the site, Levasseur remarked that “immediately behind them, 2,000 brilliantly dressed ladies seemed to form a guard of honor to these venerable greybeards, and to defend them against the tumultuous waves of the crowd.”

After the cornerstone was laid in a solemn Masonic ritual, the famous lawyer and statesman Daniel Webster gave the dedicatory address. Construction of the monument, however, was frequently halted as available funds were depleted.

The capstone was finally laid 17 years later on July 23, 1842. The monument was dedicated on June 17 of the following year, with another Daniel Webster oration.
