WOOF! Hi guys. Long time no talk, mama or Chase is always on the compooter, not sharing! It's been 366 days since I was found and brought to the shelter. WOOF. Make the photo bigger, and read my story!
It's long, but I'd say it's worth reading.
366 days ago one of my shelter favorites was picked up as a stray, and brought to the local humane society. She didn't have a name, but she was just adorable. 4 days after being brought to the shelter, she was put on the adoption floor. I was volunteering that day, 12/27/11, and she was in the first kennel on the left side, of the big dog building. She was a tannish color, with a bulky red collar. She couldn't EVER stop wagging her tail. So, this beauty caught my eye, and I slipped a leash over her head. I, then, opened the kennel door, and she came bolting out. I'd have lost her if I wasn't able to snap the leash on her. I took her into the biggest play pen, and I laughed until I cried. She jumped EVERYWHERE, Like a little bunny, just HOP and HOP everywhere. I sat on the bench, and after her long run of playing, she came and snuggled with me. I kissed her head and she looked up at me with such a happy face. I so knew I was in love! After having her out for about 30 minutes, I brought her back to the kennel and led her in. I took off the lead, and shut the door. She looked at me with eyes that said, "I love you. Please, don't put me back here." Broke my heart, that moment did. About 20 minutes later I found myself going back to that kennel- the one with a nameless dog, curled up in the corner. I took her out, again and I'd had missed her, just seconds late, and she bolted out of the kennel-- no leash. She ran all over the place. I squatted down and patted my legs. She darted right past me. I leaned over and grabbed her, she was so full of energy, so excited. I played with her for about another 30 minutes before I put her back. I looked into her eyes, and I named her "Topez". A few days later, we brought her to an adoption event. We were only there for about 3 hours, until Topez found a home. Little did I know, Topez only stayed in her home for 3 days. She was surrendered to the shelter, due to owner allergies. I was so upset. I thought she'd found her furever! About 2 weeks later, I was informed that Topez had been adopted-- AGAIN! I thought it was it for her, there was no way she'd do something wrong and end up at the shelter again. I was glowing with joy! Well, the next day, she'd done something wrong. She decided that kittys were not her friends, and went after one. She was back at the shelter. I was a wreck-- I thought, with 2 returns and her being one to scale fences, kill cats, and super hyper, there was no way for her to make it out. Was I wrong? Yup.
Within the next few days, I created Topez a page: Topez Needs A Home. I sent the page to a women named Nicole. Well, Nicole was a writer and had written an article/blog about me. She asked for pictures I had taken. Well, I sent her my favorite one of Topez. I found myself working hard to help Nicole adopt Topez. Why would one have to work so hard to get a dog adopted? Well, Nicole lived in Massachutes. Not Texas.
One day, when Topez was still at the shelter, I took her out of her kennel. I let her play and play, then I opened the gate to take her back, and she bolted. Leash and all. She ran and ran and was having a ball, gums pulled back, smiling. She knew everyone was trying to catch her. We all squatted, about 5 or 6 of us, and she ran past everyone. She was so fast, nobody could catch her! I was the furthest from her, arms open wide, big smile, calling her name. She ran right into my arms. I'd taken her home if I could. She was such a fit for ME, but not for my family or my other dogs.
So, Nicole adopted her. There were several months of transport issues, but she got home, she's still there-- July 4th, 2012-- The happiest day of my life. She'd finally made it.
So now, Topez is still Topez, but she has a last name. Topez Adams. Has a nice ring to it, huh? Well, Topez has a brother, Chase, too. I hear they are the best of friends.
Call me crazy, but Topez was one of my best friends. She could always crack me up, and put a smile on my face. I could talk to her for HOURS. Isn't that how best friends are?
