Can you believe how warm it still is, even though it's November?! We suggest taking advantage of this unique weather and go for a run (or two... or three)! You never know what the weather could be like this time next year, so might as well be familiar with all conditions!

10/20/2016

There may be a light rain this morning here in Waco, but that doesn't mean it's a bad time to run! In preparations for a race such as GBR, it's helpful to be familiar with various running conditions, as you never know what the weather might be like on race day!

(Be safe and smart, of course. ;) We do not recommend sacrificing your health or safety to train for a race.)

Dear GBR friends and fans,

The GBR Committee is bummed to announce that due to a low registration turnout, the we have decided to cancel this year’s race. :( In order to ensure participant safety and build an incredible experience for all of our participants, event preparation for GBR 2017 will begin soon!

In the meantime, start talking to your friends about making a team and begin training! If you have any questions and/or feedback to provide to us, please reach out to us here or at [email protected].

We truly appreciates your all of your continued support and desire to be a part of such an incredible event, and we truly hope you will join us next year.

Happy Monday, GBR fans and runners!

Let's start the week with a word from another one of our committee members and former runner, Jarrod! Here's what he has to say about the Great Brazos Relay:

"Running by yourself in the middle of nowhere at night - with little sleep and only the stars and your thoughts as company - might seem crazy, but meeting up with your team at each checkpoint, then running the final mile together around Baylor's campus makes the mileage worth it. That shared experience is what I love more than anything about the Great Brazos Relay. It's a lot like college, honestly. Line Camp (Baylor in Independence) to graduation (Baylor in Waco) is full of challenges, but if you surround yourself with people who will push you and encourage you, even the challenges can be fun and rewarding.

I am honored and excited to be on the other side of the event now as staff member. Sharing the story of this race, working with sponsors from the community, and fine-tuning race day details has been so much fun. As we move closer to race day, my hope is that we can create the same experience for the runners that I had as a student!"

We're so grateful to have former GBR runners on our planning team! They know first-hand what it takes to have a successful GBR.

If you have questions about the race or registration, just let us know. We're excited to add another 120 miles under our shoes!

Now that registration is open, let's talk about some of the details of the race! Below is a brief explanation of "How It Works" from our "Discover the Race" page:

Relay teams are comprised of 7 runners. During the relay, each team member runs three legs, each leg ranging between 3 - 8 miles and varying in difficulty. In addition, there are short "prologue" and "epilogue" legs that will be run as a team. Each team is responsible for providing 1 support vehicle. The vehicle will drop off the first runner, drive ahead a few miles, cheer the runner on, and provide them with water, snacks, and plenty of love. That vehicle will then drive ahead to the first exchange point to drop off the second runner, and pick up the first runner when that leg is complete. They will repeat this pattern for all legs. The original order of runners on the roster submitted at the on-site registration must be maintained throughout the relay.

If this sounds like something you'd love to be a part of, but don't have a team, or if your team is looking to pick up a few runners, feel free to email [email protected]. We're glad to help!

Ever wondered what former Great Brazos Relay runners thought about their experience? Aakash, one of our loyal planning committee members, has this to say:

"As a student, I had so many memorable moments as I stayed extremely involved; however, running the Great Brazos Relay with a group of wonderful friends is at the top of my list. As someone who loves to run, I had run my share of half marathons and was ready to try a brand new challenge. 120 miles and run through the night on fairly large highways? Why not! While this wasn't an easy race, I am so happy my friends and I signed up - the 'Seven Deadly Shins' will always be a team.

Now as a staff member, I was given the incredible opportunity to join the GBR committee, and help recreate an event that was absolutely unforgettable for me. I get to to go to work and help plan a race that could leave an incredible impact on our student body, alumni, and the Waco community - can it get any cooler?! I hope our committee can explain to potential participants that this is not just a 120 mile race, but it's also a race that entails a plethora of history - from Baylor to Baylor, in which you start from the historical Independence and end at our current beautiful campus the next day. Sign up everyone - you won't regret it!"

Here's a picture of Aakash and his GBR team!
