Waco Homespun Quilters' Guild The Homespun Quilters' Guild of Waco, Texas meets to share our love of quilting and educate others about the art of quilting. We love visitors.

We have monthly meetings on the second Mondaty night of each month at the New Road Church of Christ at 6:30. We are meeting currently at the New Road Church of Christ at 6:30 p.m. on the second Monday of the month. Visitors are welcomed!

Let’s start out your quilting week with some inspiration. Dana Grimes used a cat panel to create this lovely lap quilt. The backing even does the front justice. Melody Terrell shared her handiwork in red, white and blue. Tina Abernethy machine appliquéd French roses on this 126” x 126” King sized quilt. Carol Moyer used her long arm to quilt the final product.

Our August Show-N-Tell brought out some beautiful quilts. Susan Stephens started us out with her Chicken quilt. Next, she shared a red, white and blue Quilt of Valor. Lauranette Lewellen created an alphabet quilt and added borders to an adorable donkey panel. Her husband, Gary shared his quilt using aboriginal fabric in purples and teal.

We were honored to have Glenda Wilder from the Houston Area speak to us last night at our meeting. We learned about quilting around the world. She also shared her published patterns and the last two photos are examples from her trunk show. It was a feast for the eyes.

Some larger quilts finished up last month’s Show-N-Tell pieces. Lauranette Lewellen created these 224 circle appliqués from her fabric stash. They were created by strip piecing onto coffee filters. Marty Taylor shared her granddaughter’s Pocket Pal quilt she whipped up to store her favorite dolls. Susan Hutyra put some awesome borders around a tea-dyed longhorn panel in blues and browns. Kerri George showed a sampler quilt using 61 six inch blocks created from free directions shared by Laundry Basket Quilts in their Birthday Quilt 2024. Directions are still on their website.

Our Show-N-Tell often includes handmade creative items that aren’t quilts. This past month Judy Steward showed off a summer apron she created to wear while she taught at the Art Center. One of the crafts the children worked on was a little stuffy bird. Terri Glover was challenged by a friend to create a shirt. She came up with this blue beauty featuring sea creatures. So fun!

We had some fun quilts shown at this month’s Guild meeting. Edwina Popek started with very tiny black and white squares and then decided to speed up the sewing pace by using bigger and bigger squares. We all liked the effect. Karen Curlee decided to sew together all shapes and sizes of blocks for a neat patchwork lap quilt. And Clara Jean Matustik is in the process of sewing hexagons together in the shape of a Christmas Tree.

Our July Guild potluck and meeting was a smash hit! Hope Cummins shared with us the story of making this beautiful purple Quilt-As-You-Go heavy quilt for her mother-in-law. Christie Merrifield is holding up her entry stitched up for the Bosque County Art Show. Marty Taylor used up a TON of scraps making this Scrappy Neighborhood quilt. Its size is 124” by 110”.
