“I knew this was going to happen,” said former state Rep. Hugh Shine, a Temple Republican who lost his primary to an Abbott-endorsed candidate in 2024.

“They have everything to fear,” he said of rural school districts. “We’re seeing the results of this right now.”

Large urban-area school districts have seen the most students leave. But the effect could be felt more acutely among smaller school districts, where losing a few students can be big financial hit.
