Congratulations to the winner of the 2026 Stephen Codella, MD ‘08 Memorial Award - Richard D**e 26’ ! ✨🏒

The Stephen Codella, MD ‘08 Memorial Award is awarded annually to a Prep Hockey student-athlete who excels in all areas of the Prep experience—demonstrating a genuine commitment and pursuit of excellence on the ice, in the classroom, and in other co-curricular activities—all while leading a life as a Man For and With Others.

Rich is the definition of a well-rounded student. Academically, he carries a strong GPA despite a challenging course load, which includes 4 AP/Honors classes this year. Outside of the classroom, Rich has taken advantage of a number of co-curricular opportunities, including hockey, the Travis Manion Foundation (TMF) Hawks service and leadership group, and the Ignatian heritage summer trip to Italy. Additionally, he has worked as a caddy and as a volunteer hockey coach. Rich will be attending the United States Naval Academy next year.

The Stephen E. Codella MD Memorial Foundation wishes Richard all the best in pursuit of his dreams and we are truly grateful to Charlie Van Kula and the Prep hockey team for honoring Stephen in such a meaningful way.

Today we're celebrating Steve's birthday by supporting something he cared deeply about: giving kids access to music.
We're partnering with Musicopia to help establish a modern band program at Eugenio María de Hostos School in North Philly, and they need instruments to make it happen.

“This picture is from February 2019, taken overlooking the Sydney Harbor Bridge in Sydney, Australia. Steve and I, along with our other close friends Lauren, Kelly, Chaim, and Oisin, spent 4 weeks traveling together across the Eastern Coast of Australia in what I consider to be the trip of a lifetime - made only more special by the antics and energetic spirit of Steve. Whether he was chasing down sea turtles while scuba diving the Great Barrier Reef, standing bravely out the edge of a windy cliff, or literally almost getting knocked out by an angry kangaroo Dad - as usual Steve helped to create unforgettable memories that will stay with us for a lifetime. If only we had the chance to take many, many more trips together.”

“Steve LOVED music. He also loved performing just as much. One of the best memories I had was performing with him on stage together for one of our benefit concerts in med school. They say nothing brings people together better than music and music definitely brought Steve and I closer. I could always count on Steve to engage in fun times whether it was performing on stage, impromptu karaoke nights, or closing down the dance floor at any bar. These will always be cherished memories that I have with my close friend.”
