On January 17, 1946, the United Nations Security Council held its very first meeting in , just months after the end of . The Council, tasked with maintaining international peace and security, began by setting its provisional rules of procedure, electing officers, and organizing its committees essentially laying the foundation for how it would handle global crises.

Topics discussed included mechanisms for preventing conflicts, the use of armed forces to maintain peace, and how to coordinate with the General Assembly and other UN bodies. Even in its very first meeting, the Security Council’s focus was clear: working together to avoid the horrors of war through dialogue and collective decision-making.

80 years later, the Council continues to address conflicts, peacekeeping missions, and urgent international crises, all rooted in those first historic discussions.

Today, we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., whose words and courage continue to challenge us to do what is right.

His call reminds us that every child deserves a healthy start, the chance to learn, and protection from harm, no matter who they are or where they live.

A federal judge has lifted travel restrictions for Mahmoud Khalil, ruling the Palestinian activist and green card holder is free to attend speaking engagements around the U.S. as he fights the Trump administration’s attempts to deport him.

The Columbia University graduate was the first pro-Palestinian campus protester to be jailed by the Trump administration over his advocacy work.

During a court hearing Thursday, Khalil’s lawyer Alina Das said, “He wants to travel for the very significant First Amendment reasons that are at the bottom of this case.”

No child should have to bear the weight of war.

Two years ago, at least 39 Israeli children were killed in the October 7 attacks. Since then, the toll of war has only grown more dire—with over 20,000 Palestinian children killed in Gaza.

This is one of the world’s most complex and deadly humanitarian crises, especially for children.

We urgently call for a definitive ceasefire—to protect the lives of all children, ensure the return of hostages, and allow the safe delivery of humanitarian assistance to reach those who need it most.

Children deserve safety, dignity, and peace.

Mahmoud Khalil, who is finally free and reunited with his wife and young son after being trapped in ICE detention for more than 100 days, spoke w Amnesty International USA with deep emotion about the toll of his detention as well as the incredible outpouring of support from people like you. He shares this letter:

“To the organizers and members of Amnesty International in the United States and around the world:

I write with deep gratitude for your solidarity during my recent detention. In moments when my freedom was stripped from me, your support reminded me that I was not alone, that my voice still carried, and that the struggle for justice is larger than any one of us.

For 104 days I was unlawfully detained by U.S. immigration authorities in rural Louisiana and separated from my family and my community for speaking out against the genocide of my people. The support of communities from around the world is what kept me going. You kept me going. Thank you for raising your voices when I was detained and separated from my family.

My release is not the end of this story. Many others remain behind bars – immigrants, refugees, and activists who, like me, were torn from their families by the Trump administration’s cruel machinery of suppression, detention, and deportation. Their names are less visible, their stories less told, but their suffering is no less real. I ask that we continue to hold them in our collective conscience and fight for their freedom.

My detention was political. It was an attempt to silence me for speaking openly about Palestinian rights, for refusing to let the daily reality of occupation, apartheid, forced starvation and mass killing be normalized. But repression does not weaken conviction, it strengthens it. I will not back down. The fight for Palestinian liberation is inseparable from the global struggle for justice, dignity, and human rights that Amnesty International has long championed.

Thank you for standing with me, not only in my personal ordeal but in the broader struggle that connects all of us. Though powerful forces are trying to discredit, dehumanize and erase us, we must continue our work together.

Many Palestinians across the occupied territories and across the world are still suffering. Families are still struggling to survive. Children are still being starved. Lives are still being destroyed.

So please, stay committed to your important activism. Keep raising your voices. Keep demanding justice and accountability. Keep fighting — not just for me, but for all of us.

In solidarity,

— Mahmoud Khalil”

Tell your elected leaders in Congress: the U.S. can save lives by stopping weapons transfers to the Israeli government and by calling for an immediate and permanent ceasefire.

Please sign & email! The State of Alabama is planning to execute 59-year-old David Roberts by nitrogen gas on August 21, 2025. He has been diagnosed with serious mental disabilities, including paranoid schizophrenia. His lawyers are challenging his competency for ex*****on. The jury voted 7-5 that he be sentenced to life imprisonment without parole, but the judge overrode this and imposed the death penalty. In 2017, Alabama became the last state to end judicial override but did not apply the law retroactively. His case was also marked by ineffective legal assistance at his 1992 murder trial. We call the on the Governor to commute this death sentence.
