I don't think I brag on here about my friends often enough. They are just the best. But someone who rarely gets the kudos he deserves is Aaron Land, also known as Chaos Aaron Kixas. This guy has pulled something really special off, and I wanted to share it with you: https://www.aidteam.org/radar/
A few years ago we came together to help after the Paradise Fires and cohosted a hackathon up in Oakland and the Bay Area with Burners Without Borders and a bunch of other organizations. We took the old Seeds: The Game prototype and adapted it for disaster response, with the goal of coming up with open source, citizen science disaster information. We went so far as to found a non-profit, AidTeam, about it, and Aaron has been toiling away for the last few years making tools for people to share information about disasters and preparedness.
Well, he's finally starting to share the fruits of his labor, and his AidTeam Disaster Radar map is online! Its just the US right now, but I'm sure with some support we'll be able to get it global. With time and community support, we'll be able to use it to share real-time relief, recovery, and rebuilding resources and projects, in addition to preparedness toolkits.
Big stuff is coming from this! We'll be hosting preparedness and response events at EVO soon, stay tuned. Just a heads up if you think EVO is your bug out spot, I'm expecting you to come with your go bag and evacuation plan and we can do show and tell with the pros. Thanks Chaos for all your hard work, I can't wait to see where this project is going.
