(17/250) Smile! The alligator gar is among the largest freshwater fish in North America. They may grow up to 10 feet long and weigh more than 300 pounds. Able to adapt to varying salt levels, these fish are found in the southeast in freshwater lakes and brackish marshes, estuaries and bays along the Gulf coast.

California’s Central Valley has been called “America’s food basket” for good reason. With less than one percent of total US farmland, it produces over 250 crops and 25 percent of the nation’s food, 20 percent of its milk and around 40 percent of its fruit, nuts and vegetables.

The Quaker Oaks Farm is on the village site of Wuk'nain. That word mesns "Blue Heron". The people who lived there are called Wukchumni or "The people of the Blue Heron". These birds need water. This area was once much wetter before the dam, diversions of streams, and over pumping of water lowering the water table.
We created a smatt water feature so squirrels, rabbits and coyotes would stop chewing on irrigation lines. At the time, it was 115F. The chewing quickly stopped. Soon after, we set up a game camera and discovered many species appreciate the surface water.
