When Jeneiro first moved to The Neighborhood Village, he wanted to leave.

It was different. Uncomfortable. He and Shawna were still figuring out how to live this way. But people kept showing up for him — kept telling him he belonged — and eventually, he started to believe them.

Now he can't imagine not being there.

Jeneiro grew up without a real home. His mom passed when he was 9, and after that, home became wherever he could find it. He and Shawna were living at the Tulare encampment before The Village. He didn't think they'd ever get out.

Today, he's been on the Salt + Light workforce team since June 2025. He and Shawna were married at The Village last year. He goes back to the encampment — the one he used to live in — to bring food and show people there's a different way.

"I feel wanted. I feel welcomed. I feel like I belong. That's an awesome feeling. I can't describe it — it gives me chills. It's something I never had before."

98% of our neighbors are still home. Not because everything has been easy. Because people showed up for them — month after month, consistently, over time.

That's what the Circle of Hope funds: the case management, workforce programming, and daily community presence that makes staying possible.

If you want to be part of that consistency, we'd love to have you at https://saltandlightworks.org/coh 🤍

On Tuesday, June 2nd, The Neighborhood Village will be a polling place where you can drop off your ballot or vote if you're in our district!

Last year, neighbors from The Neighborhood Village rode a bus to the California State Capitol. On the way there, they talked about what it felt like to have no voice — to spend years being unhoused and invisible to the systems that were supposed to serve them.

By the time they got back, something had shifted. One neighbor said she wanted to be "a voice for the voiceless."

To register to vote in California, you need a permanent address. For many of our neighbors, that address didn't exist until they moved in. Neither did the civic standing that comes with it.

Belonging isn't one thing. It's being known by name, having a community that shows up, and casting a ballot from your own neighborhood.

If you're in Goshen or the surrounding area and eligible to vote, don't forget that polls open Tuesday. 🗳️ Every vote helps shape our community.

The Central Valley rarely makes the California conversation about homelessness.

Salt + Light has been quietly building the answer anyway.

This week, Assemblywoman Alexandra Macedo selected Salt + Light as a 2026 California Nonprofit of the Year through California Association of Nonprofits , joining nearly 100 nonprofit organizations being recognized across the state for the impact they're making in their communities.

What we've built in Goshen—a community of 53 furnished homes across 6.5 acres where neighbors know each other by name—started with a simple belief: people deserve more than a roof over their heads. They deserve belonging, relationships, and the opportunity to build a future they can call their own.

We're honored by this recognition and grateful for the neighbors, staff, volunteers, partners, and supporters who make this work possible every day.

The recognition matters. The work matters more.

Nobody was going to let anyone else win. That was established within the first ten minutes.

Last week, neighbors from The Neighborhood Village spent the afternoon at Adventure Park playing mini golf and arcade games. It didn't take long for the competition to kick in.

Then there’s Bingo Night.

Same room. Same familiar faces. Same debate about whether the numbers are being called too fast. Same neighbor who is somehow always one number away from winning and has very strong feelings about it.

The activities are different, but what keeps people coming back is the same.

Friendships that didn't exist a year ago. Familiar faces around the table. Inside jokes that make no sense to anyone else. Having people who notice when you show up and ask where you've been when you don't.

Last year, neighbors took nine trips together, from Yosemite and Sequoia to Bass Lake, the coast, Sacramento, and beyond. This year is already off to a good start.

Because having a home is about more than having a place to stay. It's having people to spend a Wednesday afternoon with, someone to root for during bingo, and stories that get funnier every time they're told.

What's a simple activity or tradition that always gives you something to look forward to?

When Jeneiro shared his story, he talked about how much old cars remind him of his dad. Not just the cars themselves, but the feeling attached to them — memories, conversations, the kind of connection that stays with you long after someone is gone.

So seeing him riding around the neighborhood with Ryan in one of these cars feels significant. Because somewhere along the way, what started as a shared love for old cars became trust, friendship, and a reminder that healing sometimes happens in the most ordinary moments.

If you havent read Jeneiro's story yet you can find it on our annual report at https://saltandlightworks.org/annual-report

Looking back at last year’s Soirée and reflecting on the stories that filled the room.

Again and again, we hear the same thing from people who attend: it’s hard to leave unchanged.

Not because of the decor or the program, but because of the honest, human moments shared throughout the night. Stories of resilience. Healing. Community. The kind of reminders that bring us back to what really matters.

So much of the work that happens takes place quietly and consistently every day. Soirée is one of the few moments each year where those stories are gathered into one room, alongside the people helping make them possible.

We can’t wait for Sahara Nights. ✨

Main character energy 💅🎓✨

Before there are careers, callings, or big plans for the future, there are moments like this.

Shouting out one of our little neighbors as she graduates kindergarten this year. The future looks bright, and she’s already wearing it well. ✨

Last week at The Neighborhood Village looked like full tables, loud bingo wins, and a night at the ballpark together. ⚾🤍

We got to share a delicious community meal between staff and neighbors, relaunch bingo with an incredible turnout, and end the week at Chukchansi Park surrounded by laughter, baseball, and community.

That’s what we love most about this place.
Not just the programs or events, but the moments in between them. The conversations, the cheering, the familiar faces, and the feeling of belonging.

Here are this week’s volunteer opportunities 🌱
