The California Farm Bureau is calling attention to a shortage of food-animal veterinarians that continues to challenge livestock producers.

โ€œCalifornia agriculture depends on a strong network of veterinarians who care for livestock and food animals, yet too many rural communities struggle to access these critical services,โ€ California Farm Bureau President Shannon Douglass said in an Ag Alertยฎ commentary. โ€œFood-animal veterinarians are indispensable partners in agriculture. They are there for routine herd health, emergency calls in the middle of the night, difficult calving situations, disease diagnosis, vaccination protocols and animal welfare oversight. Their work protects not only the health of individual animals but also the health of entire herds and the safety of our food supply.โ€

Farm Bureau has partnered with the California Department of Food and Agriculture to gather feedback via a survey about the issue from farmers and ranchers, which may be used to support participation in a federal student loan forgiveness program for veterinarians who commit to serving in certain areas.

Occasionally i hear people say that cattle are bad for the environment. My family has had the same ranch for 100 years, because of this we know what works and what doesn't in maintaining pasture health.

When cattle are managed properly, they can actually do a lot of good for the land. They help cycle nutrients back into the soil, stimulate plant growth through grazing, and help maintain healthy grasslands.

A lot of the land cattle graze couldn't be used to grow crops anyway. Cattle can take grass and other plants that people can't eat and turn them into a nutritious food source.

They also play an important role in keeping grasslands healthy. Without grazing animals, many of these ecosystems wouldn't function the way they're supposed to. Cattle help reduce wildfire risk significantly.

Are there things agriculture can always improve on? Absolutely. But the idea that cattle are automatically bad for the environment ignores the positive role they play on many ranches and rangelands.
