The concept of "self-help" is based upon the conviction that, given the proper tools, individuals can and will do the work necessary to improve their living conditions. This concept of "self-help" is not just a philosophy for homeownership, but is a driving force in all aspects of the organization. Self-Help Enterprises' role is ideally limited to providing technical services and support, helping families and communities compete for scarce financial resources and empowering people to be leaders.

June is National Homeownership Month!

This week, we're celebrating our partnership with NeighborWorks America and reflecting on our commitment to housing security, community resilience and financial well-being. Alongside hardworking families and indispensable partners, we will continue to champion the needs of the communities we serve and uplift the stories of those making a difference.

At SHE, we strive to make homeownership attainable, affordable, and sustainable for all. In the past six months alone, 45 families have completed construction of their very own homes under the Mutual Self-Help Housing Program, and over 6,700 homes have been built since 1965.

On the evening of June 1st, 2026, following a water outage in Plainview, Self-Help Enterprises' Emergency Services team mobilized after hours to deliver emergency bottled water to community members who suddenly found themselves without access to a basic necessity. While many were heading home for the evening, staff loaded trucks, coordinated logistics, and traveled door-to-door to ensure residents had access to safe drinking water.

For families, seniors, and individuals facing a water emergency, waiting until the next business day is not always an option. This is why emergency water programs matter. Access to safe water is essential for drinking, cooking, medications, hygiene, and overall health. When systems fail, having a team ready to respond can make all the difference.

We are proud of our Emergency Services staff whose dedication extends far beyond regular business hours, and grateful for the opportunity to serve communities when they need support most!

The conversations at this year's GRA Summit were a reminder that water is more than infrastructure, policy, or data. It's people.

We were proud to see our Director of Emergency Services, Tami McVay, represent Self-Help Enterprises and share the realities facing rural communities across the Central Valley.

While perspectives may differ, one thing remains true: farmers, nonprofits, water agencies, regulators, and community members are all feeling the impacts of California's water challenges in different ways. Meaningful solutions begin when we listen, collaborate, and keep people at the center of the conversation.

Thank you to everyone who helped make these discussions possible! Together, we continue working toward a more resilient water future. 💧

Last week, participants from the ValleyBuild MC3 Program joined families participating in the Mutual Self-Help Housing Program in Goshen to help contribute to the future neighborhood taking shape on Pheasant Street, where 53 homes are currently under construction.

Hosted through a partnership between the Workforce Investment Board of Tulare County, College of the Sequoias, and the Fresno, Madera, Kings & Tulare Counties Building and Construction Trades Council, the ValleyBuild MC3 Program is a seven-week state-recognized construction pre-apprenticeship designed to prepare participants for careers in the trades through classroom instruction and real-world jobsite experience.

“We truly appreciate all the time, effort, and support your team has given throughout this experience,” shared representatives from the Workforce Investment Board of Tulare County. “The participants shared nothing but great things about the team they worked with and the experience they received.”

The collaboration reflects a shared commitment to strengthening communities by creating pathways to both affordable homeownership and workforce development. Similar to ValleyBuild participants gaining hands-on field experience, many Mutual Self-Help Housing families also develop valuable construction skills throughout the homebuilding process that can open doors to future career opportunities in the trades.

The 2026 Affordable Housing Summit in Merced County brought together housing professionals, community organizations, and local leaders on April 30 to discuss solutions to the region’s affordable housing needs.

SHE team members Laura Fisher, Administrative Analyst of Strategic Partnerships, and Rosa Corcoles, Project Manager of Real Estate Development, presented Housing Creation and Preservation: A Multifaceted Approach to Addressing Merced County’s Affordable Housing Shortage.

Their presentation highlighted SHE’s work across the county, including new developments such as River Glen in Livingston, which will provide 80 affordable homes for families and at-risk populations, and Mercy Village in Merced, which will offer 66 units of permanent supportive housing. They also shared the broader impact of SHE’s Mutual Self-Help Housing program, which has supported the construction of 905 homes in Merced County.
