I'm a day late, but this week's throwback is a cover from 1956. Here is the description of the cover photo.
Lyman Gage, Springville, California, president of the Tule River Houndsman Association, with Rough and Junie, two of his lion dogs, and hides from five mountain lions. Rough is half-Airedale, half-hound, and is 12 years old. Junie is ¾-Walker and ¼-Plott and is two. Nine lions were killed by members of the association in an area near Springville in a period of 10 months. Mr. Gage was asked, “What does it take to make a good lion dog?” and the answer was, “A dog with nerve enough to stay with them.”
