The Lilies of the Midwest are a Irish traditional music trio based in Madison, Wisconsin. Since their formation in 2017, their unique signature sound inspires audiences with their infectious energy and joy.

Read more about them and listen to recordings on their website https://charleneadzima.wixsite.com/lotm

Former step dancer Charlene Adzima delights audiences with her driving fiddle-playing, which is influenced by Grammy-nominated fiddler Liz Carroll. Charlene has toured nationwide and notably had a residency at Dollywood.

A student of Solas accordionist John Williams, Kara Rogers is an exciting, up-and-coming squeezebox player. Winner of the 2019 Midwest Fleadh Cheoil on concertina, she has competed in Ireland twice.

Special guest Ohio-based guitarist Rick Nelson joins The Lilies of the Midwest as an honorary Lily. His thoughtful approach to accompaniment derives from the playing of Mícheál Ó Domhnaill and Dáithí Sproule.

Celebrate Norwegian Constitution Day “syttende mai” (the 17th of May) with traditional music performed by Karen Rebholz and Cait Vitale-Sullivan using voice, Hardanger Fiddle, and Hardanger d’amore. Hardanger fiddles originated in Norway in the 1600s and are richly ornamented with intricate carving, inlaid fittings and black line drawing. An ethereal resonance is created by sympathetic understrings. Traditional Hardanger fiddle music is played with
asymmetric rhythms, multiple tunings, and non standard tones which have been preserved by means of an unbroken aural chain. Hardanger d’amore is a popular viola sized addition to the
Norwegian tradition invented in 2010. Cait and Karen will introduce you to the Norwegian tunes and their stories, the dances and events they accompanied, and the legendary fiddlers who have kept the music alive.

Karen Rebholz is a Hardanger fiddle builder and performer. Karen combined her interests in the art she loved—rooted in beauty, craft, pattern, and storytelling—along with her interests in
science, music, and her Norwegian heritage when she started to build Hardanger fiddles in 2012. She first learned from studying instruments directly, online research, violin building books, and corresponding with makers in the US and Norway. She furthered her skills and understanding of acoustics in 2018 while working with Sigvald Rørlien at Ole Bull Akademiet in Voss, Norway, thanks to a grant from the American Scandinavian Foundation. She has received Gold Medal, Best of Show, and People’s Choice awards in woodworking at Vesterheim, and her Hardanger fiddles have been awarded three medals at Landskappleiken in Norway. She has performed throughout the upper midwest with “Ladies of the Fjord,” Fykerud’n Spelemannslag and Madison Spelemannslag. http://karenrebholz.weebly.com

Cait Vitale-Sullivan is from the high desert of Idaho. She is intrigued by the human connection
to nature, art, and music, and when not playing outside, she can be found playing Hardanger
d’amore, Hardanger fiddle, or singing in the forest. In 2013 she moved to Norway where she was introduced to Scandinavian traditional music and majestic fjords. Upon completion of her
bachelors in Ecology, she moved to Sweden to complete a Fulbright grant studying the
connection between Kulning (Swedish cow calling music) and landscape. She holds masters
degrees in agroecology and Scandinavian studies. Cait is currently pursuing a PhD in Scandinavian Studies, works with Sustaining Scandinavian Folk Arts in the Upper Midwest, and
founded and leads “Sjungarfolket.” She enjoys rock climbing, swimming in cold water, skiing,
and baking treats.

This performance will be a continuing endeavor I have in fusing my classical training with my lifelong love for non-classical music streams such as jazz, popular music, and avante-garde composition all of which I have also studied and performed, and nonwestern musics of which I am an admirer at a distance. With my improvisations, I hope to create a beautiful musical experience that is neither mere entertainment nor feel-good meditative droning. I will integrate pure acoustic sound with light electronics. None of my performances are pre-planned, but are purely improvised on the spot. I attempt to become a listener to the emerging sound forms just as much as an audience member. Major influences in my improvised music are John Cage, Miles Davis, Terry Riley, Ernst Reijseger, Henry Flynt, and Morton Feldman, however, my music will not sound like theirs. Instruments which are not my cello may or may not also become involved in the music.

If you have an open mind, I hope you will join me in our beautiful listening space.

Otherwise, for some more traditional music, please mark your calendars for our additional upcoming events!

Cost for the workshop is a package deal: $25 per family which will include both the workshop and the concert.

Tunes and Tales

For more than 30 years, Irish fiddler Charlene Adzima has collected adventures—musical and otherwise—that have often deserved a tune of their own. In this intimate, stream-of-consciousness performance, Charlene will share significant melodies and the stories that emerge. Some tunes are her own compositions, inspired by travels and experiences from places like Iceland, Dollywood, and life on tour; others carry the voices and stories of fellow musicians along the way. In this evening of music and storytelling, a tune may spark a memory, and a story may lead naturally into a melody, creating a warm and personal window into the joy, humor, and possibility found in both music and life. Join Charlene for a night of fiddle tunes, tales from the road, and the shared magic that happens when stories and music intertwine.

Biography

Charlene Adzima is an energetic Irish fiddler both on stage and in the classroom. Born in Ohio, she has been playing the fiddle for over 30 years, beginning with a foundation in the Suzuki Method and later developing a deep-rooted passion for Traditional Irish Music. As a teenager she fell in love with Irish fiddling and eagerly sought out opportunities to study at workshops and camps with All-Ireland fiddle champions Liz Carroll, Séamus Connolly, and Oisín Mac Diarmada.

Charlene’s distinctive playing is known for its danceable, pulsing rhythm and her growing repertoire of newly composed tunes. A former Irish step dancer, she is also in demand as a musician for Irish step dance competitions (feiseanna). In 2005 she won the title of Senior Fiddle Champion at the Midwest Fleadh Cheoil and has twice represented the Midwest at the All-Ireland World Championships (Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann).

In addition to performing, Charlene brings more than 25 years of creative teaching experience to her work with students. She holds a degree in geology and has completed Suzuki Teacher Training through Book 3. Her experience also includes violin repair and maintenance from her time at The Loft Violin Shop in Columbus, Ohio, and she has a particular interest in helping players find comfortable and effective shoulder rest and chin rest setups. Charlene currently performs with The Lilies of the Midwest, an all-female Irish band, and teaches with MadFiddle, a dynamic youth fiddle ensemble.

Brazilian Songs Without Words for solo guitar

These twenty pieces by Geraldo Vespar reveal a Brazilian guitar language that is poetic, rhythmically alive, and deeply expressive.

From syncopated grooves and jazzy harmonies to images of the sea and the feeling of saudade, each piece tells a small story without words. Together, they form a lyrical portrait of Brazilian music—intimate, colorful, and full of life.

Gabor Szarvas is a classical guitarist and teacher based in Madison, Wisconsin. Originally from Hungary, he studied with some of Hungary’s most respected guitar teachers before moving to the United States in 2012.

He founded his private studio, Guitar House of Madison, where he teaches students of all ages and levels. An active performer in the Madison area, Gabor is a member of the Madison Classical Guitar Society and a regular performer at the International Festival at the Overture Center, where he has represented Spanish music. He performs primarily as a soloist, and also appears in duet and trio formations.

His most recent artistic focus is the music of Brazilian composer Geraldo Vespar, exploring the rich rhythms and lyrical character of Brazil through solo guitar.

You can hear Mr. Szarvas' beautiful playing here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sczidNYzxMU and find out more about his work at his website here https://gaborguitarmadison.wixsite.com/guitarlessons .
