Today is National Human Trafficking Day

The state of Nevada is more vulnerable to Human Trafficking because we are the only State that has legalized prostitution in some of our areas.

Human Trafficking is the business of stealing freedom for profit.

U.S. Law defines Human Trafficking as the use of force, fraud, or coercion to compel a person into commercial s*x acts or labor or services against his or her will.

Human Trafficking knows no boundaries, it is nation wide and underrepresented. Sometimes trafficking of some nature is happening right in our neighborhoods and we just don’t know the signs.

Human Trafficking does not discriminate and affects all kinds of genders, races, and ethnicities. The most vulnerable of reported populations is homeless and runaway youth, LGBTQ+, and migrant individuals.

Some Signs of Human Trafficking include:

*Having an unstable living situation
*Have previously experienced other forms of violence.
*Are undocumented immigrants
*Facing poverty or economic need
*Substance abuse issues or have a family that have substance abuse issues.

It is so important that we spread awareness and educate ourselves about this impactful issue in our society.

Backpack for Safety!

It takes a great amount of courage to leave a dangerous situation. Oftentimes, leaving is the most dangerous time for a victim and sometimes they do not take anything with them upon exit.

Community Chest Victim Advocates are doing a Back Pack drive for Victims and Survivors of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault.

We are asking that individuals donate:
*Pop-Top canned foods- reusable lids and openers optional
Back packs- new or gently used

*Hygiene items- toothbrushes/paste, washcloths, feminine items, deodorant

*Toiletries- shampoo, conditioner, soap
Masks for COVID 19 Safety and Sanitizer
**Items for all genders please**

Some quick facts:

In 2012 it was recorded that the most reported unmet need when seeking services from Victims/ Survivors of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault is safe shelter. When fleeing from the abuser victims take a large risk and loose sometimes everything to be free from control.

In 2019, Nevada DV Programs served 37, 669 Survivors.

In Nevada 43% of Nevada Women and 32.8% of Nevada Men experience intimate partner violence/intimate partner s*xual violence and/or stalking in their lifetime.

There is a great need for these services in our communities and these are just the most recent reported statistics.

Donations can be dropped off in the Yerington County Library.

Hello Rural Nevada,

We are the Victim Advocates of Community Chest Inc, a Not-for-Profit Organization based out of Storey County serving Nevada for over 20 years.

Our team is comprised of four dedicated women with a passion for helping others. Connecting with people on a deep, interpersonal level to help them achieve their goals and heal healthy from trauma. We support and promote inclusivity, facilitating services for clients of all races, ethnicities, and genders.

As Community Advocates we understand the importance of strong community connection. Many of us volunteer our time at various Food Pantries and help out local community agencies. Community means family, a sense of belonging, safety, something that is bigger than ourselves to invest in. Setting us apart from other agencies.

The four of us serve Rural Nevada, in areas such as Fernley, Dayton, Silver Springs, Stagecoach and Yerington. Services that we provide are Court Accompaniment, Assistance with Temporary Protection and Stalking Orders, Victim of Crime Applications, along with counseling and legal referrals.

When one becomes a Victim of Domestic Violence or Sexual Assault, one can loose their voice and feel powerless. That is where we come in, to be the voice when one cannot be found. To help victims become survivors and feel empowered as they navigate this part of their journey.

We are so excited to be serving the communities of Rural Nevada!
