Last week, CGJ Director Meg Kelsey and two summer interns, Gio and Destiny, attended the 5th International Summit Against Human Trafficking in at the US Capitol in Washington, DC. It was inspiring to be in a room with so many others dedicated to protecting women and children. We are grateful to be part of the solution!

Some of you may remember Jade from last years' intern cohort! Building off of her immigration law internship at Jubilee Campaign, Jade is now is a rising 3L interning at Valverde Law this summer. She is continuing the applications she worked on during her immigration practicum in the spring.

Jade has passion for human rights. Currently she is a student staffer for the Center for Global Justice, and plans on taking the Human Trafficking Clinic this upcoming Fall. Jade has a special heart for immigrants, and as a naturalized citizen of the United States, she hopes to pay forward the gift she was given as an infant.

After graduation she hopes to practice immigration law in the DC area. Jade looks forward to her second year as the President of the Asian Pacific American Law Student Association. When Jade is not working in the Law Admissions office or holding Lexis office hours, she can be found thrifting.

Meet Cianna!

Cianna Jones is rising 2L pursuing a career in public interest law. She is deeply committed to advocating for victims and individuals who are unable to advocate for themselves, with a particular focus on protecting fundamental rights and expanding access to justice. Fluent in Spanish, she seeks to use her language skills to bridge gaps in legal representation and serve diverse communities more effectively.

During her undergraduate studies, Cianna developed a strong foundation in understanding social systems and inequities through a Sociology–Criminal Justice and Spanish dual degree. This summer, she will continue her partnership with the Center for Global Justice by interning with Advocates for Faith and Freedom. In this role, she is eager to engage in meaningful legal work that helps safeguard First Amendment liberties. She is particularly excited to contribute to efforts that protect freedom of speech and religious expression while gaining practical experience in public interest advocacy.

Meet Scarlett Kang! Scarlett is interning at Handong International Law School in South Korea on human rights research and with Just Law International in Fairfax, VA working on asylum and other immigration cases.

"I was born in South Korea and moved to the United States 11 years ago. I continued my education and earned my Master’s degree in hospitality management from Florida International University. After getting married, I spent several years as a stay-at-home mom raising my two daughters. During that time, I began thinking more about what I wanted for myself and the kind of example I wanted to set for them.

I’ve always been curious about the law, and that interest kept growing. Balancing family life, I studied for the LSAT and was able to get into my first-choice school, Regent University. That meant a lot to me because of its strong academics and values.

Now as a rising 2L, I’m doing my best every day, even when it’s challenging. I want to become a lawyer not just for myself, but to show my daughters that it’s never too late to go after what you want. I also hope to become an immigration lawyer, helping immigrants settle down smoothly and solve legal issues by making legal services more accessible."

Meet Jeremiah!

Jeremiah Moniz is a rising 2L at Regent University School of Law. Jeremiah graduated from Southeastern University summa cm laude with a joint degree in Criminal Justice and Legal Studies and a minor in Political Science. Jeremiah also graduated from the School of Honors at Southeastern University, writing his thesis, “A Case Study Examining the Removal of Unanimity in Death Penalty Sentencing,” in November 2024. He has a passion for advocating for those ignored in the legal system and eventually wants to work in either public interest or public policy law.

This summer, Jeremiah is interning on campus with us at the CGJ in the Human Trafficking Clinic, helping on a national research project that will shape how the criminal justice system views and treats survivors.

Meet Colton Hughes!

"My name is Colton Hughes. I was born and raised in Harlingen, Texas, on the U.S. Mexico border. I became a Christian at a young age, and my relationship with Christ has had a profound impact on my life. I enjoy spending time with people and have a passion for new experiences.

In high school, I became involved in speech and debate, which piqued my interest in pursuing a career in the legal field. I attended Liberty University for college, and I now attend Regent Law School, where I am entering my 3L year.

Time has truly flown since starting law school. Yet, I don’t think there has been a moment I’ve been more excited for than the experience ahead this summer. I will be interning at the Supreme Court of Malawi in Blantyre, Malawi, and will also have the privilege of serving in the Prison Project, representing indigent criminal defendants in Ugandan prisons.
I am excited to see how God uses this summer to shape my story for His glory!"

Meet Gio Lopez! Gio is interning with Shared Hope International in DC this summer.

"My name is Gio Lopez and I am a rising 2L at Regent Law. Born in a developing region of the Philippines, I have long felt a passion for human rights. Eager to understand how God could use me to meet the world’s deepest needs, I studied Public Policy at the University of Delaware and found my passion for the law during my studies. During my undergraduate studies, I also interned with the U.S. senate and worked for a Christian international development non-profit, Food for the Hungry, which deepened my passion and awareness of the deep spiritual and physical needs that continue to exist globally.

God has since brought me to study at Regent Law where He is unveiling the path He has prepared for me day by day. Currently, I am interested in supporting Christian human rights organizations through a practice of non-profit regulatory and compliance law. This previous semester I served as a student staff researcher with the Center for Global Justice working with Shared Hope International, a non-profit organization whose mission is to end s*x trafficking through prevention, restoration, and awareness.

I will continue my work with Shared Hope this summer serving as a Law Fellow, working directly with the organization’s policy team to monitor and research state child and youth s*x trafficking legislation. I am excited to see how God grows and uses me this summer."

✨ Meet Claire Lee! ✨

Claire is a rising 2L in the Honors Program at Regent University School of Law. She graduated summa cm laude from Emory University with a double major in International Studies and Music Performance (cello).

Reflecting her passion for global advocacy and bridging communities, she worked as an immigration legal assistant before law school, managing cases involving asylum, naturalization, and special immigrant juvenile petitions. She also conducted an honors thesis on migrants and labor trafficking, producing statistically significant results that demonstrated how the attribution of responsibility for state-caused migration increases public support for victims.

Her international reach and heart for ministry are woven throughout her work. As a Rule of Law Intern at The Carter Center, she analyzed anti-corruption efforts in Latin America and the Caribbean. She also taught English in Guatemala 🇬🇹 and tutored children of refugees.

Claire aims to use her law degree to protect the marginalized while serving as a diplomatic bridge. She is pursuing a career in international service, whether with the Department of State, the FBI, or in the practice of immigration law. This summer, she is interning with Advocates for Law and Justice in Harpenden, England 🇬🇧 and with Handong International Law School in Pohang, South Korea.

Outside the law, Claire enjoys playing the cello, painting, and curating narrative projects that amplify the voices and stories of those within her community. Through both legal practice and artistic expression, she strives to foster community and empower the underrepresented both globally and domestically.

✨ Meet Elizabeth! ✨

Elizabeth Bramer is from Louisville, KY and attended Asbury University, where she earned degrees in Political Science and Intercultural Studies. She moved to Virginia Beach to attend Regent Law this past August after the Lord burdened her heart to advocate for vulnerable populations. The Center for Global Justice’s mission to advance the rule of law ⚖️ while seeking justice for the most vulnerable is one of the reasons Elizabeth chose Regent Law.

Having just completed her first year at Regent Law, Elizabeth is spending her summer interning at the Kentucky Attorney General’s Office. There, she will focus on special victims work within the Civil, Criminal, and Appellate Divisions while also helping defend the constitutionality of Kentucky’s legislation.

She is excited to explore the intersection of law and politics and how they work together to protect the citizens of the Commonwealth.
