Your support means so much to us and helps us continue our mission of caring for these amazing pups. This weekend marks three weeks since Precious came home. She is the sweetest girl and absolutely wonderful with every person she meets and great with all of the other dogs.

Caring for Precious is no small task. She has no control over her bladder or bowels, so while diapers help, accidents still happen several times a day.

Earlier this week she visited our friends at Healing with Heart Veterinary Care for an evaluation. The vet believes her rear-end weakness and incontinence are most likely caused by a degenerative condition, though additional diagnostic tests will be needed to confirm.

Her bloodwork came back looking great, but bacteria is still present in her urine. She has a history of bladder stones and severe UTIs, and those issues are ongoing. A sample has been sent out for culture to determine the best course of treatment. Although she completed a round of antibiotics just a few days after arriving, it’s clear she is still battling a persistent UTI, so she has started another course of medication in hopes of getting it under control.

The good news is that we’re already seeing progress in another area. Her severe separation anxiety has improved dramatically, and with each passing day she’s becoming a little more independent and a little less needy. She is the happiest girl. Even at 13 years old, she is constantly playing with toys and it is rare to find her walking around without a toy in her mouth. Although her back legs often fail her, she doesn’t let that slow her down as she follows us happily from room to room. She is a very loving pup and a joy to be around.

When we brought Grizzly home 2+ years ago his walk showed a lot of arthritis and he would tire very quickly. Two years on the right supplements, meds and regular exercise and it’s amazing to see the shape he is in now at 13 years old. One of the most important parts of our day is medication time. Keeping all of our pups happy, healthy, and comfortable means that almost every dog receives some type of daily medication. For some, it’s as serious as cancer treatment and for others, it’s something as simple as relieving itchy skin. Most of our dogs take a combination of medications to help them maintain the best possible quality of life during their retirement years.

Because we administer so many medications each day, staying organized is critical. We go through a tremendous number of pill pouches; nearly an entire bag every single day. A pack of pill pouches costs just $6.50 on Amazon, and they are one of the daily supplies that are essential.

A week ago, we welcomed a new foster into our home. Meet Precious. Precious is 13 years old and has a history of recurring bladder stones and persistent UTIs. She is very weak in her hind end, which leaves her with little control over her bladder and bowels. She also suffers from severe arthritis, which impairs her mobility.

She is GREAT with all of the other dogs and has made Mavis her unwilling cuddle buddy on a daily basis. She almost always has a toy in her mouth and loves everyone she meets, although she definitely has a soft spot for women.

She is VERY vocal if left alone or, heaven forbid, if her mom walks into another room and closes the door behind her! Thankfully, her separation anxiety seems to be improving a little more each day.

We have completely fallen in love with this sweet girl and expect that she will remain with us as a long-term foster. Our next step is a full medical workup to confirm that her latest UTI has resolved and determine which treatment plan will keep her as comfortable and happy as possible in retirement.
