It was truly an amazing opportunity to enroll with MINTEK and the Mining Qualifications Authority (MQA) for the Artisanal and Small-scale Mining (ASM)/Surface Mining Skills Program. As the Institute for Responsible Artisanal Mining (IRAM), a dedicated Non-Profit Organization (NPO), we are deeply grateful for the unwavering support and consideration provided by both organizations.

This collaboration marks a significant milestone in our journey to empower mining-affected communities with sustainable practices and practical skills. Through this program, we aim to enhance the technical knowledge and operational efficiency of ASM practitioners, enabling them to adopt responsible mining practices that prioritize safety, environmental stewardship, and community well-being.

The skills program is a beacon of hope for communities historically marginalized within the mining sector. It is a platform for fostering economic empowerment, creating sustainable livelihoods, and promoting ethical mining practices. By equipping local stakeholders with the tools and knowledge necessary for responsible resource extraction, we are laying the groundwork for a future where mining contributes positively to socio-economic development.

We are excited to work closely with MINTEK and MQA to mobilize sustainable ASM practices and to address critical challenges such as environmental degradation, health and safety risks, and lack of market access faced by mining-affected communities. Together, we are shaping a more inclusive, responsible, and sustainable mining industry.

We look forward to continuing this partnership and achieving our shared vision of building resilient communities through innovation, collaboration, and sustainable mining practices.

There is a need to address illegal mining through formalization, regulation, and community engagement. South Africa has a unique opportunity to enhance its standing in the global market. Implementing traceability systems and certification programs will further assure buyers that South African gold is ethically sourced. These efforts will pave the way for sustainable economic growth in the ASGM sector while benefiting local communities and protecting the environment.
