Huge THANK YOU to everyone who came out for our very first Drop & Swap Clothing Event! Over 100 people filled reusable totes with new and gently used clothing.

This event was all about sustainability and community — brought to you by the VB Clean Community Commission and the Virginia Beach Education Foundation (VBEF).

While we helped keep clothing out of the landfill, the VBEF continues to make a difference by using 100% of monetary donations for its Beach Bags program. The Beach Bags program provides shelf-stable meals and healthy snacks to students who might otherwise go hungry on weekends and during school breaks, including the long summer breaks. 🩵

Leftover clothing was taken to , which further assists the VBEF through the sale of donated items.

Zero Waste Awareness | Day 7 Challenge
Donate, Don't Dump!

When you dump it, it's gone. When you donate it, it lives on. There are numerous opportunities to give your unwanted items a second chance.

✅Unwanted CDs and DVDs can be donated to the Beach Public Library. Visit their webpage for more information.
✅Check with local technical schools before tossing your household appliances and lawn equipment.
✅Electronics, clothing, and household items are accepted at many local charitable organizations.
✅Check with neighbors to see if they could use your unwanted items.

Do you have a favorite place to donate items?

Zero Waste Awareness | Day 6 Challenge
Preventing Food Waste

In the United States, over one-third of food is never eaten, and more food reaches landfills than any other material in the municipal solid waste stream.

An EPA report found that the cost of food waste to each U.S. consumer is $728 per year. For a household of four, the annual cost is $2,913, with an average weekly cost of $56.

Planning, prepping, and properly storing food can help your household waste less food and save money.

What are the ways that you reduce food waste?
