We are a large, active Boy Scouts of America troop that takes part in many activities throughout the year, such as camping, visiting national historical sights, skills events, and service projects. Troop 493 prides itself on offering a fun, yet diversified program, challenging our scouts both physically and mentally, helping to prepare them for life’s joys and trials ahead. We have great depth in
our leadership (I have been Scoutmaster since 1977, and the Committee Chairman has been with us since 1982), and a proactive committee and scoutmaster staff to assist in carrying out the program you see offered. Troop 493 organized an Indian Dance Team for the purposes of providing an outlet for scouts to learn about Native American dance techniques and achieve the Indian Lore merit badge. Troop 493 maintains the ONLY Troop Indian Dance Team in Tidewater Council that is not affiliated with the Order of The Arrow (O/A). The Troop’s Dance Team is an all volunteer group of scouts interested in practicing and performing authentic Indian dances for other scouts, cubs, and the general public when requested. Scouts help make their own outfits and attend an annual Pow-Wow where they can get numerous outfit and dance ideas, and purchase Indian items to use during their performances. The Dance team usually practices on the Monday evenings that no troop meeting is scheduled, and offers an excellent opportunity for our scouts to get comfortable interacting with other scouts and the general public. If you live in the Great Neck / First Colonial area, come on by any Monday night, 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm (Wycliffe Presbyterian Church, Great Neck Rd across from Cape Henry Hardware) and pay us a visit. We’d be happy to hear from you! You can send me a note at [email protected]
