To everything there is a season. The Little Creek Thrift Shop is moving into a new season. On Wednesday, October 14th Thrift Shop Lead Dorothy Smiley said farewell to her loyal customers. Giving out Smiles and hosting refreshments, they in turn made a banner day out of it with over $1500 in sales. On Thursday, October 15th the staff and Volunteers honored her at a special luncheon. She received a Superior Performance Award and a 3000-hour pin. She oversaw the transition of the Base Bargain Shop back to the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society Thrift Shop in 2022. Reorganizing, painting, landscaping and making sure the needs of NMCRS were met as well as the service members and families who shop for sustainable used items. For over four years Ms. Dorothy dedicated two days a week to the Thrift Shop, and many weeks would see her coordinating extra days for sorting, cleaning and pop-up sales. She led a team of Volunteers who served over 20,000 customers. Ms. Dorothy also provided resources for those in need and was continually on the lookout for those the office could assist through Budget for Baby Workshops or financial assistance. Ms. Dorothy will be missed; however, she leaves a well-trained team for this new season.

The Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society’s Visiting Nurse Program provides free health education, medical assessments and support for active-duty and retired Navy and Marine Corps families across the country.

Led by registered nurses, the initiative takes a medical approach to postpartum transitions by conducting home visits, checking infant development, monitoring parent recovery and screening for perinatal mood disorders.

Last year, the three visiting nurses serving the Hampton Roads region conducted 1,637 patient contacts and hosted dozens of breastfeeding classes for military members and their dependents.
