King's Grant Community League Preserving open spaces and serving the community in King's Grant, Virginia Beach since 1962. KGCL, Inc.

Founded in 1962, King’s Grant Community League is a non-profit, volunteer organization of King’s Grant neighbors. owns three properties that our volunteer members maintain as open space for all residents’ use. The League’s leadership is an elected board of officers and directors. The officers and board of directors:

Provides stewardship of the properties
Holds fiduciary responsibility for the league
Recruits new members
Organizes community activities
Fundraises for property improvements
Maintains governance of league business
Liaises with City of Virginia Beach and other community service organizations on behalf of league members

Membership fees are $20. Membership pays for beautification and restoration projects in common areas, social events, and a quarterly newsletter. The KGCL Board of Directors is always interested in our neighbors opinions, recommendations, and concerns.

It’s movie night at Witt Park on the lake. Showtime is 6:45 PM. Our big screen is up in the movie is ready to play. Very soon, we will light the fire pit where there will be some marshmallows for toasting. Bring a chair, bring some snacks, bring the kids and have a nice evening outside. The movie runtime is about one hour and a half.

Time is running out to register for the Little Neck Civic Leagues' event on Monday evening, October 19th where you can meet both candidates for the District 8 City Council seat. Members of civic leagues from one end of the Litle Neck peninsula to the other end are invited. If you are KGCL member, you should have received the event flyer by email. If you want to know where the candidates stand on issues important to you, please register and join us on Monday evening.

The contractor performing the lake dredging is back and work has begun again to clean up the lake between Kings Grant Rd and the Lynnhaven Baseball fields. We will attempt to get an update from the contractor's project manager on Thursday to relay to attendees at Thursday evening's KGCL meeting at King's Grant Baptist Church.

The Virginia Beach Council of Civic Organizations (VBCCO) has a meeting at the Bow Creek Recreation Center on Wednesday evening, October 21st beginning at 6:30 PM. The public is invited to attend. It is less than 10 minutes away. No reservations are required and there is no cost. A pair of guest speakers from Virginia Beach Code Enforcement will be in the room to explain how the Code Enforcement process works and to take your questions. Based on occasional notes from residents in King's Grant (regarding overgrown lots, junk cars in driveways, RVs and commercial trucks parked on residential streets, rentals in disrepair, etc.), there are some in our neighborhod who should be interested in attending.

Guest Speakers:
Trevor McReynolds, Code Enforcement Supervisor (3rd Precinct), Housing and Neighborhood Preservation. This person covers King's Grant.
Kyle Carlson, Code Enforcement Supervisor (4th Precinct), Housing and Neighborhood Preservation

Areas they enforce include:
a. Building maintenance under the Virginia Maintenance Code: broken windows, fences in disrepair, electrical hazards.
b. Property maintenance: overgrowth, open storage of trash and junk, inoperable vehicles.
c. Parking restrictions on commercial vehicles, recreational vehicles, and equipment in residential areas.
d. Safety programs covering decks, balconies and porches, swimming pools, hoarding, and unsafe properties.

The KGCL is a member of the VBCCO and by extension, all of our members are VBCCO members as well.

Here is a reminder about two events this week that are hosted by the KGCL:
- Thursday evening (October 15th, 7:00 PM) meeting at King's Grant Baptist Church. This is for our members and those who we hope will become members (that means everyone is invited).
-Friday evening (October 16th) family movie outside at Witt Park. Show time is 6:45. Bring a chair and some snacks... and hope for pleasant weather.

Here's the latest update from the city about the dredging project for the lake alongside King's Grant Rd.
The city has contracted with Solitude Lake Management to treat the vegetation on the lake with herbicide to begin the eradication process. Spraying will be done this week, possibly as early as today. The prior plan to use waterborne equipment to "harvest" the weeds so that dredging could proceed proved unworkable because the large equipment involved could not be disassembled and transported from Norfolk.
Solitude Lake Management does this type work all over the region, so no adverse effects to lake other than destroying the vegetation will occur.
The dedging contractor will return and begin work within two weeks of the herbicide application. Further updates will be in our community newsletter to KGCL members and at our October 15th meeting at King's Grant Baptist Church (more info coming soon about that meeting).

The City of Virginia Beach announced that they will begin tomorrow's trash collection at 6AM (instead of 7AM). This is to help the truck crews finish earlier on what is forecast to be another hot day at the start iof a very hot week. So, get your can(s) to the street tonight or very early Wednesday so that you don't miss the collection.
