SSL supporters - announcing the anonymous COVID-19 Teen Sleep Survey launched by Start School Later. We'd like AS MANY AS POSSIBLE grade 6-12 students to take the survey.
Please share it on your social media, tweet it, tell your friends, zoom it, encourage your kids to share it, whatever you can do it get it out! We'd like a HUGE response to this - the more data we can collect, the better our chances of making a difference as life changes to the "new normal."

I am livid! Scheduling an SOL two days after daylight savings switch over. Here is the letter I sent to Kempsville High this morning. Students are taking the writing SOL test today. Other high schools may be taking it as well.

Please write to your school principal if your student is taking an SOL today.

Whose brilliant idea was it to schedule the writing SOL at Kempsville High two days after the switch to daylight savings? Are all 11th graders city-wide taking the Writing SOL today?

Our teens have a hard enough time getting up to catch their 630 a.m. bus which now comes at the equivalent of 530 a.m. due to DST. They have had only 48 hours to adjust to the time change.

Essentially they are being asked to take the SOL at 6:10 a.m. I would not be surprised if the failure rate is higher than normal.

Needless to say I kept my daughter home. She will take the SOL on a make up day when she is well rested.

It is these details that make the early start time even more frustrating for parents.

As you know I have started the Start School Later Virginia Beach chapter and there is strong community support for later start times and this adds fuel to the fire.
