Outdoor Adventure Team (OAT)
As the USO strengthens America’s military service members by keeping them connected to family, home and country, throughout their service to the nation, we are taking the next step by providing training and access to healthy outdoor activities. The goal is to eliminate brick walls when it comes to wellness for service members, wounded ill and injured as well as their families.
The OAT pillars are: Wellness, Sleep, Nutrition, and Resilience. Through these pillars, we strive to influence a culture that will carry our military on to a healthier lifestyle path for our future generations of warfighters and their families.
Currently, our OAT home base is an indoor Wahoo Kickr Studio where bicycle resistance is controlled automatically to match each rider’s target power output for the ultimate personalized group workout. We also hold outdoor group rides when weather permits. Cycling is our flagship program; however, we plan to expand our offerings by adding running, swimming, indoor rowing, kayaking and paddle boarding. The possibilities are endless! Current participants include cyclists of all experience levels, tri-athletes, nutritionists, physical therapists, swimmers and runners.
We have sponsors, volunteers and staff on board to make this a life-changing experience. Please meet John Ayo, USOHRCV staff, who is running our OAT program. John retired after 20 years of service in the United States Marine Corps. In 2017, John won the Gold Medal in Recumbent Cycling at the Department of Defense Warrior Games in Chicago, Illinois. He enjoys giving back to the warriors and families who have given so much this country.
